The other day I visited a secular bookstore. A young Korean guy (very fluent in English) was conversing with a British woman about Bible translations. She wasn't that familiar with Bible versions --though she is a Christian. She wanted to give a Bible to a non-believing friend. The young guy and I were on the same page about translations, for the most part. We both agreed that she ought to get him an NLTse. We spoke of various versions and their strengths and weaknesses.

It turns out he is in his last year of a high school academy in New York state. He is on a vacation here in Korea for a while.

I asked him where he attends church. He replied:"Oh,I'm not a believer. I just like to read and discuss the purely academic aspects of Bible translations." Shocked,I said :"How can you possibly be so dispassionate about the Bible -- God's revealed Word to us -- which discloses who He is --and yet maintain a detached view of His Word?!"

He didn't give me a satisfactory answer.

By the way,his favorite English versions are the NKJ and ESV.

Seed/path, wow, what an example of what Christ told us would happen.

Maybe though, your conversation plowed the path enough for the seed to take root. Ya never know!

I'm wondering why all the surprise that one might study the Bible for the sake of study, instead of for spiritual enlightenment?

I've seen many a church member do likewise. But, if he keeps reading, the Holy Spirit may yet have his way with the man.

I'm rather confused as to why he deserved chastisement instead of the response of Phillip to the Ethiopian eunuch.

Nothing noteworthy here. If you think Rippon's encounter with this young man was strange, just go and sit in on most any religion class being taught in most liberal arts colleges. You will find a lot of smart people who know the Bible very well but very few of them believe the truths contained therein. Glfrederick has this one about right.

Yep, I agree. They can read the Bible, understand the Bible and know the Bible better than any Christian but unfortunately, without the Spirit's enlightenment, it means nothing to them. :(

I have been reading the NLT (Second Edition) this year and have become very fond of it. I think your advice was very good.

    How about this analogy ---

A young Amish boy reads several books about the automobile - the advantages, maintenance, safety, ect. He finds it very interesting, but until he believes in the automobile (ie that it is not against he Bible) all he has is head knowledge and will never fully realize the joy of owning and using a car.

    [sarcasm]

Well, if he'd been reading the real Bible ( I like to call it the KJV ) then he AND his famblee would have been converted already! It's these modern PERversions that keep those whose first language is not English from converting. I'm sure if we all had satellite camera feed of Satan's printing press in @#!*% , we'd see Old Scratch and his demonic minions printing out the ESV and the NKJV. I pray that somebody will go hunt down that South Korean kid and shove a King James Bible into his hands before it is too late!

The Ethiopian Eunich? He didn't understand the OT passage because he wasn't reading a King James Bible! It was Philip with his trusty AV1611 in hand who had to correct the Greek using 1600's English so that the Eunich could convert. And that is why he converted. You know how I know Philip had a KJV? I'll tell you why: the Ethiopian converted. And people only convert if the KJV is used!

You see, God gave me some acrostic algebra just now:

    King James
    Only
    Read
    Everywhere in
    Asia

I DARE someone to refute my sound logic!
