Thanks Benjamin! My son is a diabetic and I make pancakes made with oatmeal and whole wheat flour for him when he visits. I usually buy sugar free syrup for him, but I'll get maple from now on.

 Sugar is still sugar, if you plan on adding it to your son's diet be sure you keep very close tabs on his glucometer readings.

Good advise. But as for all sugar/sweeteners being the same:

The Maple Producers merely paid for the new research and do not hide that fact. But, It has been known for some time that the properties of abscisic acid and polyphenols stimulate insulin release. The study has gone to prove that maple syrup contains a high concentration of these compounds. The news is new and much more to be done so I wouldn’t go running out to drinking gallons of maple syrup just yet, but if I wanted to try a small amount of natural sweetener in my diet maple syrup would be my best choice at this point.
On a side note, I know several people that once had diabetes but who no longer have it because of lifestyle changes which include weight loss, exercise and diet. Maple syrup seems to be another promising tool to work with:

    From the article:

"Initial studies also suggest that polyphenols in the syrup may help keep blood sugar levels in check, important for diabetics, by inhibiting enzymes that are involved in the conversion of carbohydrates to sugar, he said."

    Other news:

“Along with other effects, it is known to stimulate insulin release through pancreatic cells and to increase sensitivity of fat cells to insulin, which makes it a potent weapon against metabolic syndrome and diabetes.” (News-Medical.net)

You're welcome, this sounds promising, but I do suggest some caution. The pancakes sound good too!
