You are at a meeting. There are people from a number of churches and denominations present. The moderator gets the attention of everyone and says, "Before we begin, let us pray."

A man whom you have not met before stands and says, "Before we pray I want to ask a few questions so I can discern if all of us worship the same god."

    What would your response be?

Walk the man straight out.
What would somebody who feels he is not in the company of people who worship the deity he worships be doing in such an assembly in the first place.

I know I wouldn't be in such an assembly.

Nothing, since I'm not the moderator.

If I were the moderator I would answer that the prayer would be offered to Jesus Christ, the living Son of the one and only God.

Oh, I'm torn on this one.

Part of me says that is a legitimate question. If you are in a room full of people from all different flavors of beliefs, I'd be curious, too. But I wouldn't raise the question verbally RIGHT BEFORE A PRAYER and get people all stirred up. That's kind of quenching the Spirit.

The other part of me says that this guy is a rabble-rouser. He is automatically assuming that a "Christian" of another denomination doesn't worship the same God as he does because they aren't of his denomination.

That's pretty whack and sounds like someone who is just looking for fight.

If it's a gathering of churches of denominations than we should come together with the expectation that we are like minded in worship and focus.

The moderator would, hopefully, dismiss the request and ask another of the leaders to pray.

Scarlett, the Spirit is already quenched, so I'd like to hear the questions.

What type of meeting? Where was it being held and what did it deal with?

Not quite the same situation but at the PK pastors meeting many years back in Atlanta, they decided to have the Lord's Table. Since I knew there could be some there that weren't quite the same doctrinally I chose not to paretake.
I believe in this case it should be explained to man in question that the prayer is to open up the meeting, explain what the meeting is for and that while you like to open in prayer to God the Heavenly Father and in the name of Jesus Christ. You don't mean to offend him with this type of prayer but you always open these meetings that way.

If I were the moderator I'd ask a question back:

"Why are you here if you are uncertain of which God we claim to worship?"

When the man stood up and said he had questions, I'll bet the air went out of the room.

So we might as well hear the questions. The atmosphere is ruined, anyway.
