The past few months I've cut down quite a bit on watching the news and listening to talk shows. (My dentist said I've been grinding my teeth at night, how many more days until the 2012 election?) I will watch some of the local news, but honestly have no clue about whats going on in the world from the snippets they provide. A hard hitting story from the local newscast usually involves a cat stuck in a tree, or a sink hole on some remote road that nobody ever travels. They still seem to beat that to death. (I do believe journalism is dead, at least locally.) Overall, over the past few months I have determined that ignorance is bliss.

Anyways, what little bit I've heard/seen lately is all about the royal wedding. Heard one newscaster say "the whole world will be watching". Not me. Just curious though.

    (1) Will you watch? Do you care?

    (2) Wondering what our BB friends across the pond think.

    (3) Is the general American public so enthralled with Bristish royalty, that they secretely wish we had a royal family (Is this why Hollywood stars are worshiped they way they are?)

I didn't know there was going to be Royal Wedding. Who's getting married, one of the boys? If I caught it on the tube I'd probably watch a couple minutes to see what people are wearing and what the church looks like, that about it.

I don't plan on watching it. Seems kinda meaningless to me. Of course that is what I think about the entire English monarchy at this point. They really serve little purpose.

I'm sure it'll be nice, one last reminder of a society and system that is fading from memory on the global stage. An imperial display for a nation no longer an empire.

Sounds dross I suppose. Well maybe it is. Maybe I'll watch Downton Abbey again for my penance. :)

    (1) Yes, yes.

    (2) I think that as Christians, we should pray for William and Kate as they begin their married life on Friday.

    (3) Certainly the news we see here gives the impression that Americans love the "pomp and circumstance" of our royal occasions. According to this BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) site:
Passion, excitement and interest in the British Royal Family is at an all time high for many Americans. They are as engaged in the impending nuptials between Prince William and Kate Middleton as many back in the UK, if not more so.

The US media networks certainly can't get enough of it.
Coverage of every last detail of the wedding, from the appearance of Kate's tiara and the wedding invitations, to royal etiquette and history, has been a daily fixture on America's morning shows.
I somehow doubt that many Americans "secretly wish they had a royal family", however!

I don't know about "secretly wishing they had a royal family", but it seems like the people are looking for someone to worship. Just look at all the people who grace the media over the years, many of them not even doing much of anything (beyond some sinful antics): Paris, Britney, Jessica Simpson, and now Snooki.
So of course, figures with more significance, such as the British Royalty (and especially the princess) will be followed like this.

I won't watch and don't care, and across the pond they can evaluate them royal smucks for theirselves. But that #3 question, particularly the parenthetical part answered positively, is something I have contended for a longgg time. Looking for idols; objects of worship... that's what this is about. Flood them with money and privilege and public interest... that's what's did that ain't supposed to be did.

I may or may not get up at 3 a.m. to watch the telly, but I guarantee you my wife will. Janice is an Anglophile of the first magnitude. In doing some research of her family history, I learned that she is distantly kin to Princess Diana, she also has Plantagenet ancestors.

Then I learned that probably 85% of all Brits could find some royal connection if they looked hard enough.

So the TV will be on at our house on Friday the 29th.

First, you don't have to watch.

Second, I wonder how Americans would feel if someone in the UK wrote in such a disgusting way about some important national event in the U.S.A. By all means disagree with monarchy, and all that goes with it, but please remember that our messages on this board can be seen by anyone with internet access, anywhere in the world. Surely it's possible to disagree without being disagreeable, as someone else said recently.

You are right. I don't have to watch it and I won't. The whole thing makes me sick the way people fawn over these folks as if they are some kind of gods. The idea that some are born into a position of royalty while the rest of the commoners have to bow to them is just wrong.

Much of the outside world haven't a clue what this Royal family have contributed to England and the commonwealth. This is also done with their own money, NOT government money.

During the 2nd World War, the royals remained in England to be with their people. They had been invited to Canada to escape the war.

The King and Queen walked through East London every day after the bombing. Queen Elizabeth drove a lorry around the bombing.

After the war, Prince Philip and Prince Charles helped to rebuild my home area of West Ham, again at their expence.

When Wales was struck with the cow and sheep disaster, Prince Charles personally backed the sheep farmers and support them.

The family wages were paid by the Queen and not by the government. The Queen voluntarily gave up government assistance, and even pays taxes.....her choice!

We Brits have great respect for the Royal family and their contribution to the UK and the commonwealth. Canada especially appreciates royalty (She is our Queen!)

Everyone of the male royals have served in the British armed services, and many in dangerous situations.

If Americans don't want to respect the royals, that is their business, but there is no need to try to belittle those who others do respect. We don't worship rotalty and most of us are well aware of their flaws. We do respect them.

In passing, I am disgusted at how so many treat President Obama. I remember when he visited us in Canada. He was honourable, walked our streets without a body guard and even talked to people in the streets and shops. I have high regard for him, whilst I have no use for the American government and for much of the states, but I don't go out of my way to shout ill against them. I even have a daughter and granddaughters who are US citizens,,,,,,,by choice and circumstance.

Cheers, and God save the Queen,

    Jim,

A proud citizen of both Canada and the UK.

I will definitely be watching! Setting my alarm clock for 4 a.m., putting on a pot of English Breakfast, and watching every last minute! I did the same when Prince Charles married Lady Diana.

I will be glad when it is over. Not because of any ill feelings toward the Royal family, but because there are other things that I consider more newsworthy that are not being shown at the present.

Exactly HOW did the royal family get this money? By working for wages? I think not!

At least the royalists can sit at home and don't have to buy BP gas to watch.

In 1976 I thought it would be a nice gesture to ask the Queen to let us join the commonwealth but couldn't convince anyone.

That in my humble opinion is leadership!

Jim, could you please "translate" just what is a "lorry"

Every election cycle we hear how the children of Presidential candidates HAVE NOT serve in the military
(I read that Williams entire platoon unit has been invited)

Big difference between Worship and Respect - unfortunately many Americans do not know how to show respect.

Politically, I disagree with Obama on most issues - but he is my President and I can give due respect - and I can respectfully disagree with him

    as you should be

David, Americians think its more fun to complain(as it is our Pastime) than to turn off the radio or TV !

It would be interesting to know how many people worldwide watch the US Election results (as confusing as our procedure with the Electoral College and all) and Presidential inauguration on TV?

Sometimes Americans think the whole world would be lost without us. Possible that might be true (IE WWII) But without the French underground and the solid support of England, Canada and others - we might all have been speaking German and or Japanese. Even if it was only the might of the US that won WWII - we need to come down off our high horse and accept some humility. Now if another nation want to credit us - thats great. In fact, its not what a man says about himself that impresses me, its what others say about that man.

But back to the wedding - I do not plan on watching - other than putting on the video tape for Mrs Salty (she will be at work) and if I dont.....:tonofbricks:

I do understand it something special for the Commonwealth - allow them to enjoy their special day....
May God continue to bless the USA and the Commonwealth.

That sounded a strange request till I remembered that I had never heard the English word "lorry" on the lips of an American. :) It's a large vehicle for transporting goods by road.

There are British people like that too. :)

I don't have any figures on that. It would have been hard to watch TV here without seeing something of your Presidential Election. Some people here thought the coverage was too extensive, and said so. My main point to Sag38 was that it is possible to to make such views known without being downright rude.

And please pray for the day. Apparently, there are plans on the part of some to disrupt it with violence. See this site, for instance.
