I hope he does it. It will kill all chances of re-election

I was leaning slightly in favor of this in a previous thread.

    http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=71073

I have since realized that one of the reasons they want to implement this is to capture the lost tax revenue due to more fuel efficient cars, hybrids, and yes, electric cars. You don't buy gas, you don't pay a gas tax. Therefore, let's tax miles driven.

So imagine the backlash from the Birkenstock wearing, hybrid driving, eco-nuts when they will end up paying a mileage tax on their electric car!

This is just Obama doing what he does.

He's pleased with the increase in the price of gasoline. He's continueling to try to increase the cost of electricity in your homes. Now this.

He is fundamentally trying to change the way we all live and travel to pay homage to a global scheme to take America's wealth and spread it around the world, and control what we drive and where we go.

Wanna buy a Volt for $47,000 ? No? Well, if the price of gasoline is high enough you may consider it.

A lot of people aren't perceptive enough to factor in the cost of the electricity it takes to charge it up. Meanwhile Obama keeps working to increase the price of electricity, as well.

Taxes? Increase the cost of gasoline and give the goverment more money to waste at the same time. A perfect twofer!!!

There is something poetic in the notion.

“We’re seeing more fuel-efficient cars or even cars that run on electricity,” said Susan Martinovich, director of the Nevada Department of Transportation. “Those people are not paying as much, and yet they’re still on the road and still causing congestion and impacting pavement. How do I get at those people?”

    New York Times

“How do I get at those people?” That phrase perfectly underscores the nature of this entire program – a fresh government assault on the personal privacy and the wallet of the beleaguered American taxpayer that will achieve nothing aside driving more people into near-poverty while ensuring their every move is tracked and catalogued by big brother.

The Times article concludes as all the best PR pieces for an expansion of government taxation and surveillance would be expected to, by proclaiming that the mileage tax is “inevitable” and that it will begin by all automakers installing the tracking devices in new cars as standard.

It would appear there is a lot of knee-jerk reactions from those who have not read the article ...........

"This is not a bill supported by the administration"

Why? because they are not through with it yet and because we are shell shock concerning the administration's new policy of non-disclosure:

No matter where this came from I cannot support because I do not agree with some type of tracking device attached to my vehicles.

Apparently, our resident Obamaphile forgot about two things:

    1. Obama's propensity for lying;
    2. Just because they deny that "it's a bill from the administration" doesn't mean they aren't behind it.

Of course...we are talking about CTB, and intellectual honesty is a foreign language to him...

This part of the article sends a chill up my spine:

Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations.

Talk about BIG BROTHER watching you!!! Government is OUT OF CONTROL!!!

"Taxation with representation ain't so hot either." ~Gerald Barzan

Especially with that representation is corrupt Big Government progressives! How they all keep on winning, I do not know!

Look at the bill. You can get there from the O/P.

It's 500 pages long and full of lawyer jargonese reminiscent of the several attempts at "the Health Bill", the last version of which we were not allowed to read.

This "Transportation Bill" (aka the Mileage Tax) definitely came out of the administration.

Coming soon "the Cap and Trade Bill" (aka the Tax on Thin Air).

 Very true. The administration knows how to separate themselves just far enough from unpopular ideas while still getting their socialistic agenda through. They bury them in mountains of legal jargon because they know “nothing sways the stupid more than arguments they can't understand,” and let's face it; more and more of the voting public are just not that informed.

Elections have become a popularity "Idol" type eliminations and many of those casting votes don't know the first thing about the people's views they support. I think the founders may have had it right only to allow property owners the right to vote, but in our politically correct culture we can't even broach the subject of the principle behind such reasoning without being run out of town as a racist, bigoted, hate monger. Sad :(

There is more scandelon. I have been reading the bill and it is a TAX Bill disguised as a rail environmental bill.

Remember I wondered what 'multimodal surface transportation systems' meant. Well here's a clue:

So we may very well be taxed for walking around.

It is IMO, a tax bill disguised as an environmental enhancement bill to to hide the fact that it is another "taxation without representation" piece of legislature.

Citizens should read this "undated draft" and complain, complain, complain...

Unless you don't mind a tax for leaving your house whether by car, bike, on foot, whatever.

If the government could tax the air we breathe they would...oh wait they are, that is what cap and trade is all about! They are out of control!!!

I doubt any one election is going to change this trend. My question is where can we go? As Reagan said:

"If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth." (good thing this is not our home)

Just to clarify, it need not be a tracking device. It could be something as simple as reading your odometer when you get gas at the gas station. Perhaps a bluetooth device hooked into your odometer. They don't need to know where you are, just how many miles you've driven. That said, it doesn't mean I support this idea.

I don't find this requirement chilling. The government already knows or can guess how many miles you drive.

Do you think that used car dealers shouldn't be required to report the mileage on their vehicles when you buy them?

Much simpler to raise the federal gas tax. I suggest at least $1/gal raise.
