why Baptist?

I have been saved for 48 years, so beetween us there is 92 years of salvation.
My Dad raised a catholic had come to Houston to work, now I trying to remember he didn't go into deep detail of how it happened but what I think I rember is this. He was sitting on the steps of his apartment when a mna approched him and told him about the Lord, he heard the Gospel and accepted it. Shortly after that he met my mother and she was Baptist, so we went to Baptist churches my whole life. Started in SBC even trusted Christ in SBC church, but when they weren't teaching deeply enough Dad took us, yes young folks he took us to a totally independent, fundemental, doctirnal teaching church. The pastor taught book by book verse by verse, but at the end he would always bring out how to be saved. There are very very few of those churches around anymore, too many are centering on shallow things. Too many give you 3 points and poem to make you feel good about yourself. No deep teaching anymore just skimming. Not all but many of course the Apostacy of the church is in full swing today just as revelation predicted. Just the verse says they will want their ears tickled. So I too know what you mean about telling someone why to become a baptist.

 

I was blessed that my mother sent me to the church around the corner, which happened to be Southern Baptist. My mother was not active and my father was unsaved.

The Lord saved me when I was 9, in 1947. The same day I was baptized, my mother moved her membership and became active. The Lord saved my father a year or so later.

So all I was ever exposed to was Baptist doctrine and practice. But there came a period when I heard other views, and was forced to re-examine what I had believed was true. Those doctrines and practices withstood a fairly rigorous testing.

So today, I am not only a Baptist by raising, I am a Baptist by conviction.

I was raised Baptist. I've been to many different "types" of Baptist Churches and learned to accept the denomination, the good and the bad.

Then about 13 years ago I went to a Pentecostal Church with a girl I was dating and got a little scared. Needless to say it didn't work out with her and I didn't go to Church for a while.

 

Two reasons I'm a Baptist: (1) No one but a Baptist cared enough about my soul to ask me if I was saved, although I had no idea at the time what that meant.

(2) I believe Baptists are the closest to the truth, although we can't all agree on some scripture interpretations.

 

I am not a Baptist by accident. The Baptist in my opinion are the closest doctrinally to the early church of the new testament.

I do feel that salvation is not being preached enough in many of them like it used to.

 

I was born and bred Baptist as were my parents and my dad's parents. (some of my mother's elder relatives were Church of God of Prophecy or more likely "whatever church was closest" or nothing much at all.)

But I haven't remained Baptist for that reason. If that were the only reason I was Baptist I'd have shaken the dust off my feet as I have a good deal of what I was "raised" with.

I'm Baptist, because careful checking of what I did believe against the scripture lined up more exactly with the SBC than with any other group.

 

Truth be told, I exited another denomination and embraced the Baptist faith for two reasons:

1. A pastor who served as a mentor to me was himself a Southern Baptist. He made sense. He was gracious. He was not condemning.

2. I decided to research the Southern Baptist and admire the freedom yet accountability of this denomination.

But I'm also aware of the shortcomings with the Southern Baptist and overall, Baptist heritage.

 

You just haven't been to the right Baptist Church lately. Some of us are still like that.

 

Would to God that more pastors (SBC and otherwise) were more like #1.
