Should circumcising be illegal even for religious reasons

That's just ridiculous.. I've never heard anyone complain about having been circumcised.. Misdemeanor and $1k fine? People are so retarded nowadays..(that's my opinion..)..Our little one is not circumcised ..we just never got around to doing it, and now we've decided to let him make that choice when he's old enough.. but I probably would have if we were able to (didn't have private insurance coverage when he was born)...but making it illegal is just crazy....

I think Mama Government needs to shut up and mind her own business!

Honestly, I can abort and end a child's life, but I can't have him circumsized a few days after he is born???? How much sense does that make?

It makes me laugh at the American cry at how "free" they are.

    Cheers,

It's there for a reason. Why should people be allowed to cut off a piece of a kid's body? The argument that parents should be able to do as they wish with their own children needs to end when it comes to body alterations that last a lifetime.

I think the government should keep its nose out of this matter.

    Period.

So are finger and toe nails and hair, yet we trim them.

    You asked...

In this case, hygiene issues give significant reason; few would be/are diligent enough to take the necessary steps to maintain a level of cleanliness that compares with those not having a fold on skin to trap bacteria, germs, sweat and dirt.

People in general, especially children have the attitude that “out of site equals out of mind” and therefore are neglectful and this often gets to the point of disgustingly unclean habits; the phrase “sweeping things under the rug” comes to mind. Speaking of which I suppose many/most today also neglect a better hygienic practice of trimming the carpet to maintain a higher degree of cleanliness. BTW, you ought to see to nasty, dirty, scaly, smelly, infested feet with long untrimmed nails that I have come across since beginning my clinical practicum. Filthy neglect….just FILTHY, why, well, the attitude of “who sees it or who cares”!

Often the above kinds of better hygiene practices, because of social and cultural issues and hang-ups typically go unmentioned, for example: the percentage of young women who were caught by surprise with their first menstrual cycle just a generation ago. Yeah, leave it alone, it’s taboo, keep it out of sight and maybe it will go away, these things just aren’t/shouldn’t be talked about or addressed, are/should they be?

Just leave it alone and let them decide? How many would take the step to make such a change after having habitually lived with the alternative for 18 years? I would argue that the parent has a right to address such issues with their child and in the case of circumcision it is a sensible and practical procedure done with good reason shortly after birth so that it may last a lifetime.

A positive "alteration" to aid the child should not be done? Also, curious what you do with God requiring this of the Israelite parents.

What the government must be trying to do is work on the national debt. They could make the fines retroactive for about 50 years. They could start with the body searches at the airports. That would get a lot of Jews and Gentiles. This would also include the Moslems--they clip foreskins religiously too. This is an interesting study to discover the origins of such practice. Did Isaac and Ishmael both get the sign? Probably not Ishmael, that would include him in the promises only for Isaac and his progeny.

Some make an analogy between male circumcision and baptism. I find that is a bit difficult to believe other than that they are both signs of a covenant. The analogy breaks down when one considers the covenant sign with Abraham was for the boys only, apparently.

In as much as that in Christ there is no more Jew or Gentile, bond no free, male or female--all are the same anyway. There is only one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism.

The real circumcision is of the heart which is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Jesus paid it all.

    Peace,

    Bro. James

I think it was an old-fashioned physical law that helped set them apart and helped in those days to keep them healthier.

Nobody's under that obligation anymore. Now it's circumcision of the heart.

Why is such alteration positive in today's world anymore than it would be for a girl?

Ben, are people really so lazy that cleaning their own parts is considered a problem? Good grief! Do you know how much more difficult it is for a woman? We don't go chopping off parts though, we're pretty smart and know how to deal with it despite there being more major "issues" than that of males. And if we're gonna get all Biblical, there's no evidence that it was done for anything other than religious ritual and those rituals are no longer required. Now if any male on here daily looks down and thinks of Jesus or goes around showing it off as identification of his association as was done in Biblical times, then...well, that would be scary but please don't force others to do the same. ESPECIALLY if you think it's religious, don't force it on people, let them decide when they're old enough.

And yeah, I've seen the results of males not keeping clean. Worked in nursing homes where males came in and had to undergo circumcision because their caretakers were clueless and let things go until it was almost too late. There are women who weren't cared for either. But that doesn't mean we cut off live tissue from infants. You work in a medical clinic...you can't compare cutting hair off your head or trimming nails from fingers and toes the same as cutting the skin off a male's most sensitive area. Come on now....you know it's true.

People in California need to spend their time worried about saving the state that is ready to go bankrupt financially rather than worrying about absurd things like this. They really need a life.

While I don't think it's absurd to worry about it, I have to agree that the timing is kinda nutty. As much as I disagree with the practice, it's been going on a long long time and the world won't end if it isn't immediately stopped.
Things aren't being properly prioritized. Then again, does that ever happen in government? Okay, maybe in Alaska. (I think Palin is one smart chickie when it comes to running stuff)

People will always mock religion. While his approach is idiotic, he really is highlighting the background of circumcision though. But sometimes even jerks get the idea right, they just approach it in offensive ways. Like this guy. Some Christians make the same error and turn people off to the truth with their approach. How many times, even on this board, do you run across jokes about atheists being stupid, Mormons being called morons, on and on. There's probably an equal amount of mockery and offense going on between humans of all different belief/non-belief systems.

I find this conversation very interesting, and like Gina, I am mostly against circumcision, but I think for Jews it should be still allowed because of religious freedom!

So are you saying it should be made illegal, except for religious reasons?
