Not completely sure how they plan on selling off their building to get out of bankruptcy and, thus, keep it...but this is a sad moment.

Notice the key here is the huge debts they accumulated. I can't imagine they have an annual income close to their debt burden ($50,000,000...yep that's a lot of zeros.)

And with the "quiet split" (when Schuller's son left) having taken a lot of their younger, more generous families they can't be left with much.

One thing to consider is how much more this will be happening to cold, dead mainline churches in the face of continued growth in vibrant, evangelical, Bible based churches.

I was never impressed much with Schuller even as a motivational speaker. I never even considered that group to be much of a church to begin with. Otherwise, just another piece of real estate up for sale.

Does anyone know what, if any denomination they are? I don't recall ever hearing it spoken of.

    The Crystal Cathedral is Reformed.

They won't make a lot of money trying to sell the Fiscal Cathedral.
I think the fact that it is an ugly building coupled with the fact that there was a deadly shooting there.....it's about as bad as when MJ wanted to sell the Neverland Ranch.

The building is not Reformed --it's made of mortar and lots of glass.

The worst thing, the very worst thing they've done since ousting Schuller (and I'm not defending his theology) is do away with the excellent music they once had. One of the finest organs in existence isn't even being used much or at all. Their choir, which was once a fine group under choral great Don Neuen, is now not much more than a loud, clappy ensemble. It's a tragedy.

I read the other day that the Roman Catholic Church purchased the property out of bankruptcy court. They'll permanently run it from now on.

It's all very messy put there now. Robert Schuller is pretty much gone and his kids are trying to the run the place. His longtime CFO passed away recently too. Just a sad thing to watch.

I have never considered the Schuller family as standard bearing believers.

It was evident many years ago, that the father compromised over and over in favor of wealth and power.

For a woman to even be considered a "pastor" shows clearly that the state of the assembly should be considered unlearned in the Scriptures and unskilled in the discernment of the Spirit.

If I were of the Reformed Churches, I'd break fellowship with that assembly, or leave the association. Much less drove me from the SBC some 40 years ago.

How can a church that preached and taught "name it/claim it/power of positive thinking" go broke?

That place always struck me as the place that "Country Club Christians" go. Meaning, those people that put their name on the roll because its a part of the status portfolio some people try to build. (country club, organization membership, church membership, professional membership, etc)

Well, for what its worth, Schuller wasn't a "name it and claim it" guy. He was positive thinking. There is a vast difference between the two.

Not THAT much though, as BOTH of them would equate Christians as being able to "make" God do things on our beha;f by visualizing it, confessing it, thinking on it hard, speaking it etc!

There are many more to follow. The estimate of plateaued or dying churches in America is 70-80 percent.
