I'm interested in opinions regarding Temple Baptist Seminary. They seem to have dramatically expanded their distance education offerings in Dr. Lovett's tenure, so it has caught my attention, as I have a professional and academic interest in distance and non-traditional education.

I know the basic information in terms of TRACS accreditation, cost, offerings, etc. I'm most interested in opinions regarding the seminary in general and the distance programs in particular.

    What say you, BaptistBoarders?

I'm presently a D.Min. student. I have only one course left online and then my doctoral project to complete. I was just on campus a week ago for their "Research & Design Procedures" course, which occurs at the Seminary for one week. Here are a few thoughts:

    (1) The online program is very similar to that of Liberty University / Seminary. They use Blackboard delivery for online courses and some professors utilize it better than others, though when I was there I know that the school was training profs to utilize online resources more fully in their courses.

    (2) This is not a diploma mill. You will have to put in some work and effort to complete their degrees. That being said, it is very accomplish-able.

    (3) Competent and impressive faculty. Many of the profs are Ph.D.'s in their fields or hold other terminal professional degrees, backed up by lots of real world ministry experience. The men teaching preaching preach and those teaching missions have spent years on the mission field.

    (4) The campus is adequate, though it is in a part of Chattanooga that used to be much nicer than it is today. There is renovation happening in the old downtown area but its not impressive. The campus reminds me very much of Moody Bible Institute, being situated in a downtown area with multi-level buildings, but not nearly as nice. The library is good and the librarian is great. The campus could use a renovation and it will likely get some of that in the future I suspect. The soccer field is in the middle of a renovation.

    (5) Its a good school in transition from its former "glory" days as an IFB school to a school with a broader focus, while retaining Baptist distinctives and conservative views of the Bible.

It strikes me that is a great alternative to Liberty or Luther Rice as far as conservative and completely online programs. A number of the students I was in class with had Seminary (M.Div. mostly) degrees, like myself, from Liberty in fact, along with a Southern graduate and folks with undergraduate degrees from other SBC schools.
