So, the doc put me on meds containing steroids to help my asthma. Anybody know how to combat the inevitable weight gain? Already this week I've gained three stinkin' pounds! I'm hungry ALL THE TIME. This is nuts! Do I only have two choices, to breathe or not to breathe? Anybody have experience with this? Before now, I've just taken an inhaler as needed, but now I have to take a super strong inhaler on a regular basis, plus meds.

I know several people who have gotten off the steroid inhalers through weight loss and regular exercise. As a matter of fact a lady I worked with last year, who lost 100lbs in 11 months, now only rarely uses her inhaler which is a much milder dosage. She started using steroid inhalers at 8 years old and went from normal weight to obese by age 12. Before starting her routine (lifestyle changes) she regularly was admitted to the hospital about 2-4 a year for asthma attacks and carried around a bag full meds; this was the norm for her for 16 years! She has not had an attack for 19 months now. Her pulmonologist (to her Dr's credit) has weened her off of almost everything as her test results continually showed remarkable improvements. She does have scar tissue but manages this setback well.

;) Or you could just pump iron and compete with these guys:

Your body will adjust to it. I've been on it for a time and my husband has been on steroid inhalers for our entire 26 year marriage!! Yes, he's overweight but that's from not exercising and eating too much. :)

I'd make sure that I did just a few things: walk daily or exercise daily if possible, drink plenty of water and increase my vegetable intake. That should help.

Do some weight-training and dedicate yourself to this as a lifestyle change. Benefits of weight-training are great.

Try getting in more lean meat protein, as it is more satiating and also is thermogenic. If you take up training, try to get about 1 to 1.5 grams of protein in a day per pound of body weight. Limit white breads and starches, or better yet go whole wheat, and replace potatoes with sweet potatoes, and avoid all white enriched flour as it spikes insulin, and in turn it stores fat each time you eat it.

Walking about 20 minutes per day will help you burn fat in addition to the weight-training. Building up your lean body mass will cause your body to burn more calories, even while sitting, and sleeping.

Do this, and you can have 1-2 cheat meals (not cheat DAYS as many think) per week to reset your metabolism in a sense and keep your body tricked into not knowing what is coming and prevent fat storage.

Anything I can do to combat the constant feeling of hunger caused by the steroids? Kind of hard to eat less when you feel hungry all the time.

All I got for you here is: Self discipline; my trainee used to say the hard workouts and sore muscles were a good reminder to eat better and less. If you're sticking to a exercise commitment you feel you've worked hard and earned the weight loss, that makes one think twice before eating that extra serving or sugars and such.

Drink water whenever you feel hungry. Drink a large glass and wait a little bit. If in about 20 minutes you are still hungry, find a good high fiber, low cal snack that will hold you over well.

Thanks for the tips. I stopped taking the steroids yesterday because they were making me have horrible hot flashes. I felt like I was having heat exhaustion all the time. I'm not going to take them unless I start GASPING for breath. Ugh. This is not good.

I don't know the name offhand of the inhaler. She put me on Singulair and another med I haven't tried yet, due to the problems with the inhaler.

Hmm - Singular also has steroids in it. Was the inhaler Dulera? That's a new one that I had used this winter and it worked really well for me.
