Which Flag is offensive?

    I recieved an email (I do know of the individual)

    Home work assignment. Corwin Amendment.
    My commentary.
    Flags are inanimate objects. I will NOT say the pledge to ANY FLAG,be it Church, US, Confederate,etc. If anyone does not understand this,then I`all say it in different words. I am not an admirer of Saint Abe. 600,000 + lives "to preserve our republic" is not a rational justification for s evil slaughter.

    IMHO,(hindsight 20/20),The Corwin Amendment is not in guvmint history. Why? How was the ungodly issue of slavery settled in other countries without war? Was this war of northern aggression really disguised? i.e. Industrial complex vs. Southern agricultural?
    Was this war really fought either to perpetuate or to destroy slavery? I am amazed at the knee JERK verbiage of those "history / Constitution"
    EX SPURTS,that quote bell,book,and chapter "true history",but fail miserably in depth research. "Are you still fighting the civil war?" One of the most trite phrases I`ve read is"settled law." The legality of secession is "settled law?" I don`t think so. Having said this, I pledge my allegiance to the Republic of these United States, NOT to the flag. Perhaps this is too philosophically deep for many. My
    suggestion. Think,pray,and reason beneath shallow. Do your homework.

    Bill, not trying to be funny here, but what would you say about a group flying the Nazi flag. My understanding is that the Nazi flage is illegal in Germany. Wikipedia reference (it is a long page) Do you support Germanys law forbidding the Nazi flag?

    Your thought takes this OP in an entirely new direction.

    I can't help but ask what you mean by that post, especially including the link to the (admittedly illegal) actions of the governement. Please explain.

    In answer to the OP: I am having a hard time understanding the point of the email you received. Is the man mad that the North put a stop to slavery through war, even though the South competely ignored the proposed Corwin Amendment, which would have made it illegal for the thirteenth amendment to be passed?

    Any flag is simply a symbol. They originated when, on the battlefield, units needed to be able to organize and identify themselves. They grew to be so much more, and now stand for all the ideals that the organization that they represent hold dear. To despise a flag is to despise the organization it represents, be it the USA, the Nazis, the Confederate States, etc.

    With that being said, our pledge is not only to the flag (which again, is really only pledging to what it stands for), but "to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

    On a final note, he says "Perhaps this is too philosophically deep for many", but uses horrible grammar, and obviously has no spell check, and expects to be taken seriously.

    Excellent post! You brought up some excellent points in reponding to
    Genes remarks. The only thing I would not complete agree with was the WBTS was not fought soley over slavery. States Rights was a main factor.

    Actually one big difference bettween the North and South is that even tough both were, - the Southerners ,unlike their Northern brothers, admited that they were raciscts

    I apologize for the ambiguity. I did not mean to imply that slavery was the only issue. I was just trying to make sense of why the person who sent the email brought up the Corwin Amendment, and then talked about slavery being settled without war in other countries.

    The purpose of a flag is to convey information. Might it be useful to know who the NAZIs in your neighborhood are?
