I hve never heard that hymn before, but I would have no problem at all singing it. It was God who gave me the resolution. :godisgood:

Some of those fit into Calvinism just fine.

My Hope is Built on Nothing Less- especially.

Edward Mote wrote My Hope is Built and he was a DEVOUT CALVINIST! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!

    You guys are so FUNNY!

According to A Dictionary of Hymnology I quote
"Edward Mote, a baptist laymen of the strongly Calvinistic school published in 1836, "Hymns of Praise".

    You guys are so funny.

I bet having just barely perused your silly little list I can find several more that are written be DEVOUT Calvinists!

But of the few that are not- I'd be interested to know the average AGE of those songs.

I bet it is around 75 years old- especially if Methodists had nothing to do with the writing of them.

Because this new hodge podge of doctrines that you guys who call yourselves Baptists who have no theology espouse are very new.

I like "I am Resolved"- if you are it is because you are regenerated.

God gets the glory not only for providing Christ for you but for bringing you to him.

If you are resolved- you mark her down- God in unspeakable grace made you that way.

Bless his name or your own that you are resolved- which is it?

You answer my question first as it was given first and then I will gladly answer yours as it was given second.

Since no matter what I answer, you will somehow twist it into me bragging about my own salvation, I will not answer for you.

Now back into the killfile you go...

    and adding to this list:

Guide me O thou Great Jehovah
    I'm not ashamed
    Though Troubles assail
Jesus thou art a sinner's friend
    How tedious and tasteless

    And I could go on....

    Or the REAL reason-

You know you cannot answer the question honestly reflecting your beliefs in a way that doesn't bring glory to yourself rather than give full glory to God.

    Excellent.

This Arminian, or whatever they call themselves (who knows?), wishes he had not started this smug little thread now, I am sure.

Every "non-cal" is going to lose any debate that has anything to do with the history of the Christian faith- they HAVE NO HISTORY!

This new nameless stuff is younger than PETNECOSTALISM!

HEY! At least the UPC's have Sabellius!

Who do these people who have no systematic theology have in church history?

Who, besides Arminius, who they do not like either though they are MOST like him, has ever held to Substitutionary Atonement for EVERYBODY???

Who has held to eternal security while spurning the first four points of Calvinism before a hundred years ago???

There may have been a few but I bet a list of their hymns is AWFUL short!

    Brother,

Are you an "undercover" ORB?? The ones I bolded are some of the ones we sing. The words "lined" and "straight out" are in reference to how we sing them. So we sing in "lined out" form only, others "straight out" only, and some we do both ways. They are the good'uns!!

BTW, here are a few others:
"The Day is Past and Gone"
"Tarry with Me, O, My Saviour"(Also titled "Abide With Me" in some of our hymn books")
    "Besides the Gospel Pool"
"Jesus Left His Home in Glory"
    "Jerusalem, My Happy Home"

When you say "we" aren't you talking about the NEW branch of Old Regular Baptists that you are a part of?

Didn't you split from the real ORB's?

If so, shouldn't you call yourself the NEW Regular Baptists?

You do realize that Regular MEANS Calvinist, don't you.

You do understand that in this country there were two types of Baptists- General Baptists who believe in general atonement (the Free Wills spawn from this group) and the Particular Baptists who believed in PARTICULAR redemption- the PARTICULAR (calvinist baptists) so dominated the baptist world in this country that they became known as REGULAR Baptists.

I find it strange that you spurn the doctrines that your Baptist forefathers cherished while still conveniently clinging to their name.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I do not claim my understand on this matter to be infallible.

Well, Brother Luke, the ORBs go back to the 1820's, and maybe even further than that. The New Salem Assoc. came from the Burning Springs(or vice versa). I am not for sure if all ORBs were Calvinistic or not at that time. The assoc. I used to belong to, came from a split in the Mates Creek Assoc of PB's back in 1893. The IB has been around since the late 1800's, maybe 1880 or so.

What do you mean by "real" ORBs?? I find that sentence as slanderous in nature.

Now as far as "Regular", I do not know if that means Calvinist or not. It does mean "Original", so that could mean "Calvinist".

Well, my understanding of Baptist history is that the Regular Baptists were Calvinists. That was what distinguished them from General Baptists who were Arminian.

If you call yourself a Regular Baptist, ESPECIALLY an OLD Regular Baptist, it seems that you would hold to that distinctive which MADE them REGULAR- Calvinism.

It would be like you splitting off from a Baptist church, starting a church that believes in Mariolatry and sprinkling infants and ex cathedra and then having the audacity to call yourself- ORIGINAL Baptists!

If there is slander, it seems it would be in just the existence of a movement that calls itself Old Regular Baptist while undermining basically everything, at least the main thing, the REAL or ORIGINAL Old Regular Baptists stood for.

Perhaps my history is off a bit on the Old Regular Baptist movement, but I'm pretty certain that "Regular Baptist" did refer to one primary distinction- they believed in Calvinism.

Well, Sardis came from a split in Mates Creek PB, and they have been in correspondnce with New Salem for over 100 years. So I guess New Salem wasn't Calvinistic back then. Sardis has never been Calvinist, for that matter.

New Salem was originally UB back in 1925. The name UB came from the a merger of I think the Separate Baptists and PB's(??), so they used the name United because of thier common beliefs. Now, Bethel(formed from a split in Union assoc in 1961), Original Mt. Liberty, and Sovereign Grace assoc have always been Calvinistic. SGA came from a split in Northern New Salem back in the 1990's. Those churches went into OML, and then armed of to form SGA.

Thank you for the information. As I said, I am not thoroughly versed in your particular (or general- ha! ha!) Baptist movement.

Apparently you lost your distinctive as a Regular Baptist about the beginning of the 19th century when the Separates and the Regulars merged.

Up until then "Regular Baptist" meant Calvinistic Baptist.

    Then you changed.

I think that NS still has a few churches closer to Calvinsim than the others do. They have decided to not split hairs over it, though. But, I could be wrong on this...

Hi, I'm new on this board and thought I would be the lone Reformed Baptist on the board. I am a recent adherent in sovereign grace, and my wife still holds to the Semi-Palagian view of salvation.

I had been reading Spurgeon's sermons and kept thinking that he would have been such a better preacher if it weren't for his Cavlinism. Then one evening I was reading Romans when the truth of sovereign grace came upon me as did the illumination of sola fide did to Luther:

And those He predestined, He also called; and those He called, He also justified; and those He justified, He also glorified.

    Romans 8:30 HCSB

If he justifes those whom he calls, and he calls everyone, then everyone would be saved. There was no way to work around it. It could only be that he does not call all.

It was shortly thereafter that the hymn ("Only Trust Him") was selected for one particular evening invitational. My wife asked me, "So how do you did you like the hymn of decision tonight Scott?" (She knew full well it was one of my favorites.)

    I said, "I love it!"

Said my Semi-Palagian wife, "So you believe that every soul by sin oppressed can find mercy with the Lord?"

Said I, "Of course. Only those who are elect are oppressed by their sins. Others are oppressed by the consequences of sin."
