Being recently involved in some geriatric care and witnessing the effects of these diseases I hope these wellness statistics are worth sharing:

"In the U.S., physical inactivity is the biggest changeable factor, accounting for 21% of the risk for Alzheimer’s"

Another in a long list of reasons to be physically active.

My brother Richard has Alzheimers....He is a double century touring bike rider, in EXCELLENT physical shape, has never smoked or drank, and avoided sugar and additives all his life. He was always chiding me about
losing weight and other things that he never did. He bragged about his
great physical shape...I weep to think of him now, just a shell of his
    vibrant former self.

My Dad had full blown Alzheimers when he went to be with the Lord in 1992. He was healthy too, worked hard all his life on the farm and never smoked or drank, he was a deacon and loved the Lord. I am sorry to say that heredity MUST play into this horrible disease.

Research shows genetic tendencies to be the leading factor.

It is a shattering disease, and you have my prayers. I learned a little about support groups and they appear very helpful for those who dealing with watching the mental decline and/or taking care of their loved ones who are suffering with it.

I would agree that heredity plays a big part, however I believe the latest research showing that certain lifestyles changes will reduce the occurrence by up to 50% could have a huge positive impact for those willing to make those adjustments.
