In the noah's flood thread Webdog said:

I didn't want to derail that thread but this brought a question to mind concerning Gen 7:2

Most of the time we hear that Noah took the animals by 2's this scripture clearly states that he took the clean animals by sevens. I understand that he and his household needed the clean for sacriface. Now the question: Since the law concerning clean and unclean animals had not been given, how did he know the difference between clean and unclean animals?

Scripture does not spell out how this took place but there is only a couple possibilities as I see it. One, God sent those animals that He wanted on board and Noah did not have to go looking or God gave Noah information on which was clean and which was unclean and Noah went looking.

Well, anything that we say is going to be sheer supposition, but...

....let's suppose that Noah had absolutely no idea what God was talking about when He said "clean and unclean" animals.

The Bible says that God brought the animals to Noah. Noah didn't go and round them up. He couldn't have. He would have missed the ones that he didn't know about and couldn't have "rounded up" the large or fast animals. Even though the fear of man was not in them yet, they weren't all pet-like.

The animals came to Noah and walked, hopped, flew, crawled, or ran into the ark. We could suppose that when Noah saw only two of the pigs that he figured out that they were unclean and he saw fourteen of the sheep he figure out that they must be clean.

That's assuming that Noah knew nothing of clean and unclean. That's all I could I came up with if God didn't directly tell him.

But what if he DID know? How could he have known?

What could we suppose here? I'll tell you what a couple of friends of mine said on another forum last year when we talked about this.

Both of those make sense to me. But it's all still supposition.

Nothing wrong with tossing these questions around. The atheists are doing it with a vengance and calling the Bible a lie.

Not all details are in the Bible. Most information was passed down by word-of-mouth. In Genesis we read that the sons of Adam had knowledge about animals, but we don't read anything about those animals beforehand.

    Cheers,

This is a very important thing to remember. That and the fact that the absence of a prerequisite detail does not negate the validity of an included detail.

Not everyone wants to believe that. Certainly not non-believers who are trying to discredit God's Word and a relatively few believers who believe that the words and only those words, and not the Word, are the truth.

I can remember when the animated film, The Prince of Egypt, came out. I talked to a family of believers who were grossly offended because one of the early montages in the film showed baby Moses in the basket floating down the Nile and the crocodiles, hippos, and ships were nearby and a threat, but God kept him safe.

They said, and I quote, "But Moses couldn't have been around any crocodiles or hippos or anything like that. The book of Exodus would have said so!!"

Yes, this helps to establish the importance of good hermeneutics. It helps to resolve a lot of the questionable areas.

    Cheers,
