    I took two Biblical literary courses in college--The Old Testament as literature and the New Testament as literature.

    In my Old Testament as literature class I did wrote a term paper "Samson as a Tragic Hero." In which I identified those elements of literary tragic heroes and applied them to Samson.

    For my New Testament class I wrote a term paper where I set forth Moses as a prefigurement of Christ.

    The seed for this idea came about as a child one Easter when I was watching the beginning of the The Ten Commandments and mistook the slaughter of the Hebrew children for the slaughter of the Holy Innocents.

    I detailed several parallels between Moses and Christ.

    One of the parallels was between the first and last plagues and the first and last acts of Christ's early ministry.

    Changing the water into wine parallels to the first plague as wine is at the Last Supper Christ made it clear was a symbol of blood.

    The final act of Christ's ministry, his vicarious atoning death as the Pascal Lamb clearly parallels to the last plague: The visitation of the death angel and the salvation offered by anointing the door posts with the blood of the sacrificial lamb.

    Other prefigurement was the flight to Egypt, the fact before their ministries they wondered in the wilderness, and the parting of the Red Sea compared to Christ's walking on water.

    I got a B- on that term paper because I failed to articulate the significance of Moses' prefigurement to Christ.

    I was thinking tonight that I'm still not sure of the reason God chose to prefigure the Messiah in the life of Moses.

    My best guess is by having the pattern of the Messiah prefigured by Moses would lead Jews to belief in the Messianic Lordship of Christ.

    Are there others?

    7He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

    Hebrews 3

    1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

    2Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

    3For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

    4For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

    5And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

    6But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

    Jesus is the New Israel, The new Exodus,......and us IN HIM.:type:

    Having just preached (exposition of Matthew) on the feeding of the 5000 and soon on feeding the 4000, I saw the crowds "messianic expectation" swell as they saw Jesus as the new Moses for their generation to lead them from the bondage of Rome.

    But Jesus cut that parallel off quickly. He provided Bread of couse, but not thru manna or anything like it. Then He repeated the miracle a few days later to a group of non-messianic gentiles.

    The messianic crowd focused on Moses. His prophecy of "That Prophet" (the Messiah) was the buzz. On the Mt of Transfiguration, the disciples were going to build a memorial to Jesus AND Moses. Lots of confusion.

    So to see in some aspects of Moses' life a "type" of the Messiah was valid even as Jesus walked on earth. And many lessons for us today.

    Always thought that Joshua/Josepph were 'types" of Jesus, weren't they?

    The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
    Deuteronomy 18:15

    So it seems like Jesus is that Prophet. The Book of Acts also quotes this in reerence to Christ. I think that the Muslims think Muhammed was that Prophet like Moses but as you stated there is far more similarities between Jesus and Moses then him.

    I believe a good study of the Book of Matthew will also bear out those same ideas. I actually think Matthew tried to show a connection between Moses and Jesus, because of Matthew's audience being the Jews, and because of their reverence for Moses.
