London riots and angry youth: a speech

    *tap, tap* Is this on?

I really feel for peaceful Londoners right now, and with the riots spreading to other cities, I can only imagine the worry and fear that must be growing in English families in these areas.

We have hyper-stimulated our young people today in every aspect of their lives. There is no time--and way too much restlessness--for real reflection or consideration in their lives. Moms and Dads, for those families fortunate enough to have both, are often too busy with their lifestyles crowded with careers, furthering their educations, volunteering at their kids schools or elsewhere, the ever-ringing phone, and the long list of activities for which their kids are in constant need of a ride somewhere. Parents and children have very little together time to experience peace and deeper communication together.

Young people are bombarded with stimuli: ever-present rage-filled music; an endless stream of frantic, explicitly violent video games; media over-stimulation of every kind; and even sugary starchy foods, caffeine, and power drinks designed specifically to increase energy, both physical and mental. Such stimulation must have consequences. It must be released somewhere.

Imo, one reason we don't currently have riots in America like those in London is that our youth are often both over-stimulated and bored at the same time. But this is only a temporary state. Boredom, dissatisfaction, and restlessness can quickly turn into destructive rage, and one spark that causes anger can start the fire of mob mentality.

Society used to have checks and balances in place to help contain or direct the energy of youth, and especially young males. In past societies our young would burn off some energy working long days with their families. They had the wisdom of grandparents living in their homes. They in some sense respected the authority of those over them, which tempered some impulsive behavior. Discipline had real consequences. And they were far, far less stimulated and had less of a feeling of entitlement. Most of all God was more welcome in more homes--not always because of faith, but often because of fear. There was more of a since of His authority that should be respected.

For centuries, and especially in the modern era, we have steadily removed these safeguards that formed part of a healthy upbringing, and we and our children are the worse for it. Londoners are only paying the price in a more visible way, but we in America also reap what we sow.

We as believers must be the first to change, and thus to begin a change in society, using the wisdom of God's Word as a guide. Let's reject the way the world raises its families. We should be salt and light, especially in this area. If not us, who?

Thank you for being here tonight. There are T-shirts and CD's available in the lobby.

Anyone remember all the bad press we got from GB during the Watts riots?

It is interesting that the rioters appear to be white kids. I thought we white English speaking people were civilized.

Was listening to BBC Somerset. They had a poll asking if listeners thought the parents of the rioters were "afraid" of their children, or if the unrest was the police's fault.

The thugs carrying out these crimes are of various different ages, colours and nationalities. It is not limited to "white kids" as you put it.

Some are reported to be as young as 11.

There is an easy cure for all this. Have the police set up hidden machine guns posts around the area during the day. Hundreds of them if not thousands along with snipers on building tops protecting property, the innocent, and the fire department as they put out fires. Warn the people on the news that a curfew is declared and no one is to venture out during certain hours less they bring on themselves the threat injury or death.
Then if the thugs return mow them down.

Well, I wonder how many of those taking part are illegal immigrants and if they are caught will they be deported instantly?

It would be interesting to see how many are on benefits - will their benefits be stopped?

I hope someone somewhere will be tracking ebay as I have a feeling some, maybe quite a lot of the looted stuff will end up for sale on there and similar sites.

Well that's not going to happen, but I read that they are issuing rubber bullets to police now. That should be efficacious. :)

I understand it will not happen but it is a sure fire resolve. The rubber bullets are a joke most of the time. Yes they hurt, but proper padding can overcome that. I stand on my recommendation as it would not happen unless they continue to try and destroy and lute. Their fate would all be on the individuals own head.

targus, if you have ever followed my posts you know I am not kidding. Doing what I stated no one would be shot if they obey the law. It is that simple.

Subjecting a civilian populace to a policy of summary execution? I've read some real doozies from you, but this takes the cake.

One question I have for you is where you think actions such as this ultimately would lead, since precedent would have been set.

You may want to rethink things.

No I stand on what I said. If they got shot it would be totally their own responsibility. You can bet if they were breaking into my home or business or trying to burn it down I would shoot them.. The only difference here is they have clear warning of what their actions will bring.

But what you have actually been advocating is the execution by sniper of civilians on the street past curfew with no questions asked.

You claim to be a limited government guy but now want to hand the government the power of execution for a noncapital offense without due process.

This mentality is neither Christian nor wise. This is a tragic mindset and should have no place on a Christian board. Shame on you.

I wonder how many of the rioters are part of the hordes of third-world immigrants admitted into the UK in recent years.

To my knowledge, police in the UK have not yet used plastic/rubber bullets, water canons, nor called out the military. I'd say all these are steps to take before summary execution, though I can relate to your anger about the lawlessness. Thugs doing evil without consequence outrages me, too.

I have not seen the story in the headlines for the last 2 days. Have things calmed?

Looks like the flash mobs in Philly are finally being addressed, too.

c 3000 arrests and counting. I have to admit that my initial reaction was similar to that of Freeatlast, particularly as my wife's family lives in Croydon, one of the London boroughs trashed by these goons. But my inner Christian prevailed....;)
