There is quite a discussion on the recall elections in WI.

I had a thought - suppose you do want to initiate a recall- I propose you put down a bond - say $2,500, or some reasonable formula. If the recall fails - you forfeit the bond - If the recall is sucessfull, the bond is returned to you - with interest.

If there is enough interest in a recall, then several folks could help to participate in raising the bond.

The purpose would be to discourage excessive recalls. As we saw in WI - 4 out of 6 failed.

Absolutely not as it is totally unnecessary and possibly counter productive. A recall already requires a certain number voters sign a petition prior to any recall and it usually has a time limit on getting the signitures. If those numbers are not met then no recall can be started.

The union bosses would not be deterred, just another thing to (mis)spend dues on.

Gee, Jerome, can't you turn this thread into an anti-abortion rant?

And that right there is part of the reason for my ideal. How many people who actually know what they are signing. Many sign just because someone told them too (including union bosses).

I wonder how many of the signers in WI knew the issues of which they disagreed with?

I'd be against such an idea.

Some people will always be stupid. Now they would be better-funded. They'd just be signing by proxy for whomever is putting up the bond.

it doesn't matter. Posating a bond will not change what you are trying to suggest. The steps in the law are sufficient on the matter of recalls without requiring a bond..

You don't get it. The petitions to have a recall are not the vote. The petitions show that enough people are seeking it to justify putting it to the voters and that is the way it should be. There should be no added charge.

Actually I do - you said it better than I could

That is my whole point - many who sign have no ideal of what they are signing - they are only sheep....

if the instigators have to put up a bond - they might be more cautious -
remember - a recall vote costs a lot of money.
If you have to pay 100 poll workers 100 dollars for the day - that is 10,000 dollars. and in this day and age, we don't need to be throwing money around like that. ( now if the recall was on a scheduled election day - that might make a difference. In addition - they have to mail out absentee ballots. Voting machines must be moved, and I am sure there are many additional costs.

In fact, look at Wisconsin - they just had a recall for 6 Senators, and now in a week or so, two more senators are up for recall - why didn't they have them all on the same day.

If I were a socialist or live in Russia I might agree with you but there are some downsides to freedoms and democracy and this is one of them, There is no need for a charge in fact there is no justification and must not be any such thing unless we want to lose more of our freedoms.

That is a question many here have. We have what is supposed to be a nonpartisan election board that oversees things, but it has of late not been acting very neutral.

    This was their decision.

Many eyebrows were raised because the way the elections were scheduled had the potential of benefitting the Dems with regard to the balance of power in the state senate.
