This note is not to take away the significants of other translations of the Bible, but I was given the New Living Translation Study Bible and am really enjoying it. I know there are many here who would not recommend the NLT, but as a pastor who wants to get the un-learned into the Word, I really think this would be a great Bible/Translation to begin with.

And please know, I'm not taking anything away from other translations.

God Bless you all in your work for HIS kingdom.

I used a copy of this version twice over the past ten years in my daily disciplines. I was able to take notes in it and really enjoyed how certain things were stated. Particularly in the Old Testament there are some wonderfully worded passages.

For a number of new believers I have recommended this translation. :)

NLT study bible good to use, but make sure NLT is the revised 2004 edition, not original 1996, as that was to much of a "dynamic/free" version!

The NLT that I own is the revised (2d ed, 2004). Mine is called the Life Application Study Bible (which may differ from other NLT study Bibles). As a lay person who isn't heavy into theology, I've found that the Life Application series is more in tune to what I like to have in a study Bible.

In particular, mine is a large print edition [that helps when you are my age!] with thumb indexing & bonded leather burgundy color. It also has my name embossed in gold on the front cover.

I've had it since 2008. The purchase price was reduced. (It helps if you know personally the sales person [who is also our founding pastor's son] at Lifeway!!)

I tend to switch between this Bible and my more worn out KJV Large Print.

I agree. The Life Application Bible is a very good study Bible too. I have one (though it's in the NIV). A lot of good foot-notes for understanding & questions for application to ourselves (hince: Life Application).

    I think it's special too.

It clarifies the text in ways that literal translations are unable to do.

Totally agree that it opens up the text for the unlearned!

Is it (the NLT Study Bible, 2004) more literal than the NIV? I have an NIV Life Application Study Bible.

The first thing a person must do when they read a new translation is READ THE INTRODUCTION

Here is a small part of the NLT's introduction.

Even better is the 2007 version which tightened things up a bit.

Deacon answered that in his post #9.However,it bears saying that the NIV is considerably more literal than the NLTse.

If I correctly understood your post, Rippon, you are saying the NIV is more literal than the NLT, second edition which is the 2004 version. I did not see in post # 9 where Deacon said the NIV was more literal than the NLT.

The TNIV,84 and 2011 NIV are more literal than the 1996,2004, and 2007 incarnations of the NLT. But the NLT has moved slightly left with each revision. It's still dynamic -- but less so than earlier. The CEV,TEV,NCV and others are much more dynamic.

Think that the Niv 2011 is still regarded as being more "literal", but they woukld be close since the 2007 updated version!

Thanks, looks like the NLT is worth adding to my collection of translations.

try it in the NLT Study bible, good study notes, more of a mediating position, like a NLT version of NIV study Bible!

I have a copy of the 2007 edition in Giant Print. I have to remember that this version is dynamic equivalence, and can not be trusted as can a Formal Equivalence version.
Also, this is an inclusive language version. So, I do my readings in it accompanied by a ballpoint pen to make corrections in the text as regards this.
The translation committee was also contacted heavily by a Jewish gentleman, whose name escapes me, whose main reason for living seems to be eliminating so-called anti-semitic passages in Christian Bibles. So, in the NLT, you will see such cave-ins to political correctness as 'the Jewish leaders', instead of the correct translations of hoi judaioi--the Jews.
The NLT may be used, IMHO, with caution.

ALL translations are dynamic to a degree, even so called "formal equivalence" versions.

There is no political correctness being invoked...this is fallacy that has been put forth by mainly the KJVO crown

The expression “Jewish leaders” is found 33 times in the NLT's New Testament, (23 of those times are found in the gospel of John).

    [John 1:19, 2:18; 5:10, 15,16,18; 7:1,11,13,35,; 9:18, 22; 11:53; 12:42; 13:33; 18:14,31,36, 19:7,12,31,38; 20:19]

Exactly who was against Jesus and his message of repentance?
The Jews as a group? or the Jewish leaders?

Look though the list and see where the phrase "Jewish leaders" is misleading or incorrect.

Remember the NLT's introduction that states the translators "clarified difficult metaphors and terms to aid in the reader’s understanding."
