    All,

I will be placed in a teaching position soon at my church, and I was wondering what is a good OT Commentary to supplement my studies? I have MacArthur's NT commentaries (most of them), but nothing except Matthew Henry on E-Sword for the OT. Any ideas?

Go to www.biblesupport.com there are many many commentaries there for free for your e-sword, and many other helpful modules.

Also try www.doctordavet.com. You might get the Expositors Bible modules there, also free, and more, all free at both sites.

Yea, the NT, and I ain't being cute. "The new is in the old concealed, the old is in the new revealed", origin Augustine.

I reference Jamieson, Fausett and Brown commentary often, and also John Gill and Matthew Henry.

[edit] BUT DON'T FORGET WE LIVE IN THE AGE OF THE INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE; THANK GOD! Thank God for all his servants who have donated their labors of love in transposing soooo much literature to the cyber world.

I actually like better OT survey by DR Gleason Archer, quite a bit more Evangelical!

Also, there are good survets of both OT/NT Commentaries by DR carson I believe!

I don't know if you're still looking for advice on this but there are several which I would encourage you to consider.

In my studies I prefer individual book commentaries (or section commentaries) to a survey style commentary. The individual studies are more focused and can pick up themes missed by survey style commentaries. Also, generally they individual studies are written by people who specialize in the book and can elucidate more significant points than general commentaries. (Sorry thats a long intro)

If I had to go with a general commentary I'd encourage Mark Dever's The Message of the Old Testament. Here Dever gives a good overview of each book which he delivered as individual sermons at his church. Also, though its dated, Keil-Deiltzsch is generally regarded a decent.

As a whole set I'd always recommend the Word Biblical Commentary or the New International Commentary on the Old Testament. Both are excellent representations of evangelical scholarship. The NICOT is more approachable for a layman's perspective and might be more helpful on balance for your needs.

I believe someone else mentioned the Tyndale Old Testament commentaries by IVP. They are quite good.

Now if you want to get into individual book discussions I'll simply refer you to the site I go to (in part) when considering commentary purchases:

    www.bestcommentaries.com

This is a great site and really will help you out. I like MacArthur and recommend him for our group leaders if they ask. The new Broadman & Holman commentaries are good but miss too many passages.

I hope this is helpful and not too scattershot. :)
