    Apparently the ranking is based on the average salary.

    That could be misleading.

    I would rather see a stat based on, say what % of pay does it take to buy groceries, or car expenses (gas, insurance, ect) or possibly compare some normal expenses - such as haircuts (NY city =$25 ? - Syracuse = $12 - big difference);
    cable TV costs, ect.

    Bottom line, sure Mississippi, may have a low income average, but the cost of living is so much less than a NY City or Los Angles.

    What a bunch of garbage. Hey Billy, I'd rather have $40,000 in Montana than $100,000 in most of those "rich" states. Your's included.

    I may live in one of those "poor" states, but my $120,000 house has 4 bedrooms and a nice yard. Or, I could live in a "rich" state and pay 3 or 4 times that amount for an equitible property. Oh and I could pay through the nose for property taxes while I was at it.

    Yeah, I think we'll just stay right here. :)

    But the median wage in Idaho is 49K and the cost of living is about the same as Montana.

    I'd rather be on welfare in Washington than live on $40K in Mississippi.

    I'd expect nothing less from a union guy like yourself. You got plenty of company in that state, as well.

    What's the sales tax in Washington ? Mine is zero. I always get to about Spokane, before I start missing the "poor" state I live in.

    Washington consistently is in better shape that Oregon. Oregon has an income tax, no sales tax. Washington has a sales tax, no income tax. I don't have to pay a state tax on money i don't spend.

    Hey, Jerry Brown Would Disagree With This List!

    California was not on the poorst state list. Wow! Governor Brown will be very upset for this most recent snub! :smilewinkgrin:
