Possible U.N. Vote on Palestinian Statehood--What if the U.S. Doesn't Veto?

The Palestinians are likely to ask the U.N. Security Council to vote on creating a state for them on the West Bank. The U.S., as a member of the U.N. Security Council has vowed to veto the proposal. (It only takes a veto from one of the five permanent members of the Security Council to scuttle any proposal. Members are: China, Russia, U.S. France, U.K.)

But what if Obama changes his mind? Obama has made overtures to the Arab world since he became President. He's supplying aid to rebels in Libya, Egypt, Yemen and elsewhere. Surely if the U.S. vetoes a Palestinian state all of the confidence he's gained from the Arab world would be flushed away. In fact, Saudi Arabia is warning the U.S. that there would be many policy shifts against the U.S. if it vetoes this proposal.

The United Kingdom and France aren't saying which way they would vote. I would presume that China and Russia would be O.K. with the proposal (they rarely veto anything.)

I suppose the U.S. could abstain. The problem for Obama is that if he doesn't veto the proposal he will infuriate Israel and millions of evangelicals. He will probably lose most of his Jewish supporters and contributors. This would be devastating to his re-election bid.

Which got me to thinking--maybe Obama is a one term President, by his own design. Maybe now that he's got the Presidency he's going for broke. Consider the battle for health care. Consider his free spending ways. If he doesn't veto this proposal it's going to be hard to live down the claims that he's a secret Muslim.

I shudder to think what will happen if the U.S. does not veto.

Yeah the world will end fer sure!

I got a better idea. Let's get out of the United Nations. Then we wouldn't have to keep paying for all the anti-democratic anti-American garbage that comes out of it.

Lets stop trying to control the entire world and mind our own business. Pay the UN whatever the assessed value of the UN building is worth and evict them. Close all embassies.

I'm a strong supporter of a two-state solution so I hope the UN does grant statehood.

Most everyone is but not without proper negotiations. I hope you understand this will cause an all out war if it goes through.

There's no need for violence. What we need is a peaceful Israel and a peaceful Palestine living side by side. And there is no evidence that this would cause a war.

This is not the way to do this. There is evidence. The Palestinians will try to claim land that Israel will not give up. The big problem will be the Temple mount.

Really? Supposing the UN votes to establish a Palestinian state on the West Bank. There are 1,000's of Jews living there. Do you suppose they will just shrug their shoulders, willingly pack up their belongings and move into a tent city somewhere? I don't.

So they don't want to leave. What/Who is going to be the enforcement mechanism to remove these people? Is the Israeli armed forces just going to stand down and allow Palestinians to take over occupied territory?

This has the potential to be a real serious bloodbath.

I'm in favour of a two-state solution but the devil will be in the detail, in particular boundaries, and in particular East Jerusalem.

And where are these 'millions of evangelical voters' that Obama wiill lose? I wasn't aware that there were many or even any who voted for him in 2008...?

I didn't say he would lose evangelical voters, I said he would infuriate them (if it were possible to infuriate them any further!) He would lose Jewish support, both votes and financial contributions.

If we don't veto there might be more people who stop hating the US than there are Jews who use us.

Such and ignorant view. It completely overlooks the consequences that would arise for Israel.

The effects on Israel would depend upon what the UN stole back from them. It would be crazy and evil to steal back both the West Bank and Gaza. As crazy as the Brits were to partition India with Pakistan divided and India in the middle. Personally, I think the Brits wanted the Hindus and Moslems to kill each other.

If UN only stole back an enlarged Gaza. Say a straight line was drawn from the northern most point of Gaza to a mile north the Egyptian border of Israel on the Red Sea and the mostly triangle of included land was given to the Palestinians. This would give both countries a Red Sea access. and wouldn't hurt Israel in the least. It would be sort of like a thousand square miles in Nevada east of Death Valley for an African American nation.

If Christians and Jews didn't both worship the dirt in Israel the simplest solution would be to give every Jew in Israel US citizenship and pay to move anyone here who wants to.

There are only 5.7 million Jews in Israel, almost the same as their US population. No big deal. Never happen because Christians like Jews the same way that the Jerusalem Church liked St Paul . . . in someone else's town.

You continue to show you have no idea what is going on over there. The bigger issue is security for Israel and the fact that everyone else in the region only wants, and will only accept that Israel be abolished. They do not actually want a two state solution.

How will giving them the bottom few miles cause a great danger to Israel?

Look billwald it's best for all involved if the Palestinians just stay in their little open air prison they've been herded into where Israel can keep her guns on em till Jesus returns. And we'll make out like bandits by supplying the guns and ammo!

I agree about the loss of the Jewish vote (although I still can't see the Jewish constituency voting en masse for a Republican candidate) but what does Obama care about infuriating evangelicals? Precious few of them voted for him in 2008, so why shouldn't he annoy them?

He cares because there are plenty of Democrats who would be upset with him too.

Poll: 70% of Israelis say Israel should accept UN decision.

Israel should accept the decision if the UN recognizes a Palestinian state, about 70 percent of Israelis answered in a recent Hebrew University poll.

The poll, which was conducted jointly by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah, also found that over 80% of the Palestinians support turning to the UN to obtain recognition of a Palestinian state. The survey was supported by the Ford Foundation Cairo office and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Ramallah and Jerusalem.
