There is much wisdom in Lin Yutang's writings. I fear far too many Christians now advocate revenge over goodness, mercy and kindness.

The world is sick because it ignores the teachings of Jesus Christ which are those stated by the chappie who is quoted.

When did the values goodness and mercy and kindness become un-Christ like?

I was SO sickened yesterday morning. My typical morning starts with waking up, grabbing my coffee and I-Phone, and heading outside to feed the birds and watch them eat as I skim through the local news.

The news was like nothing I'd ever seen, and it was just LOCAL.

One of our area 10 year old girls was visiting relatives in Texas and it appears a family friend abducted her. Her body, stabbed to death, was found behind a bush a few blocks away.

A mother and her boyfriend in jail for stabbing a two year old, whose body showed signs of major physical abuse in the past.

    Bait shop robbed, clerk shot.

A husband killed his wife and then himself.

The body of a man was found, police are investigating.

A teenage girl was shot in the face and killed.

They're still looking for leads on the case of a teenage girl who was dismembered and stuffed into two duffel bags, which were left behind a local grocery store.

An off duty officer was hurt when he came across a man choking a woman, who passed out and when he and another officer tried to get the guy, who ran into his apartment, he went out the back door holding two very young children by the necks.

In the midst of all that comes the news that our state is releasing hundreds of people from prison to save money and help ease overcrowding. If they served 90 days of sentences and the the sentences were under 5 years, they're eligible provided the crimes weren't considered violent.

And no, I'm not exaggerating. A lot of the info is still up there, look at the headlines on this link, lower left hand side: http://www.koco.com/news/index.html

So why is the world sick? From what I'm seeing around here, people don't value life. And if you don't believe in God, you don't believe in consequences after death so why not try to get away with it on earth? Even here, it's unlikely that you'll get the death penalty and some people just don't mind jail. Don't think they'll get caught. It's worth the risk to them.

What I'm seeing in our country is a lack of respect for other people, everyone living life to please themselves (you have to do what makes you happy and fulfilled within yourself appears the motto) and people are SO immature! I see it in the schools. I was talking to a junior class a couple weeks ago and they told me that when they came in, there were still senior schoolkids who would give them some guidance, a little mentoring to help them not act like idiots, but it wasn't many. Traditionally, seniors have been leaders in the school. From what I've been being told by different classes and teachers, that role has been on a steady decline and the behavior of freshman coming in gets worse every year.

I only expect things to get worse unless people finally get sick of it and start standing up for change. The parents either don't care like they should and nobody picks up the slack there because they're too busy making themselves happy and fulfilled, or they care but are afraid of our oppressive government if they try to do anything more than give a wayward kid a time out. In fact, we have a police officer out here being charged with beating his 12 yr old stepdaughter. The headlines are screaming it, then when you read them, you find out he spanked her with a wooden paddle, twice in the last year (the last time for stealing $20 from her moms purse) but it's considered a beating...it left marks and she screamed like a banshee. Some kids don't respond to time outs and when a kid is on the path to criminal behavior, a parent should have the authority to spank them and if they get bruised and it saved them from growing up to be a criminal, DO IT! Of course if he hadn't and she grew up to be a criminal, everyone would say "where were the parents when she was younger?"

Teachers can't even give bad grades without both the kids AND the parents getting angry over it. Kids are cussing out teachers, teachers afraid to step into fights because the kids don't give a rip if the teacher gets hurt.

You know, these kids get older. Then they're not kids. However, I hear "he/she is just a baby!" over and over again, even when their kids get in trouble with the law. The last one who said it was talking about her 30 yr old son who got in trouble with the law, but she thinks they over-reacted and he's just a baby, still has time to change.

No God. No faith. No concern for others. Focus on self and how to make yourself happy. No decent leadership. No heroes. No role models.

Yeah, we're a sick, sick society.

I make no excuses or corrections for typos.

Another few years when the good old days return and we are all serfs it might be a more peaceful world. At least more stable.
