    Especially around New Haven.
I have some questions/concerns about it. Does anyone here live in that area? I'm looking into it and am very thrown by what appears to be extremely high crime stats. Daughter has her mind set on college out there and I'm reading stuff about the mayor needing voted out, a mom shot in the face by a stray bullet just driving her young son through town, seven shootings in one night, a ridiculously high number of robberies closely followed by high numbers of rapes.

Some of these are being posted in the New Haven forum, but the statistics gathered per capita lead me to believe that a lot of what they're saying is not just exaggerated the facts.

This really concerns me and I'd like to get more information before I start discouraging her from the school she's got her heart set on and has been working her tail off to get into. There ARE other ones, hopefully in better areas. I was really shocked that this particular area would be so rough though.

First congrats to your daughter. I went to a invitation only seminar last year (assume same college) and the crime question was brought up. The recruiter seemed to brush it off. Unfortunately, other Ivies have the same isses.

You will definitely want to discuss this when you visit -- and when you visit the other colleges as well. God's best to you in her college process.

It's usually only an issue if you are in the inner city but on the outskirts, it's usually much better.

See, that's exactly what I'm afraid of...that the college isn't owning up to the issues there and addressing them properly. I know nobody wants the problems focused on, but why places and cities like this get that if they're open and honest instead of leaving the impression that they're trying to sweep things under the rug and make things appear better than they are, people have less trust and will take their talents and/or money/business elsewhere?!

The greatest opportunities in the world aren't worth risking one's life and health for.

Rte 91 runs through some of the ugliest places in the U.S.. D.C., Baltimore, Philly, New Jersey, N.Y.C., it only makes sense that these would be high-crime areas.

Climate- usually moderate winters, summer is hot & humid.

C.T. has laws against driving while using cell phones.

But the state has lots of rural areas, the Appalachian trail, etc..., and people come from all over the country to see the beautiful New England fall foliage. And the coastal drive between Mystic and New Haven is also a high point.

Talked with a friend this past weekend who has a nephew there. He hasn't heard of any specific problems from him, but he has heard that the city has that reputation. His thoughts were that if someone stayed on campus they should be fine. (Note: he's not a big fan of that school, he's from Cambridge.)

Also, almost all universities haver really stepped up security since the incident at Virginia Tech with additional campus police, emergency poles scattered throughout campus and so forth.
