As part of the debt ceiling deal last August Congress voted to assemble a Debt Reduction Supercommittee that would find $1.2 Trillion in spending cuts. If the committee failed to find the cuts then automatic across-the-board cuts would occur.

Well it's be 3 whole months and apparently some members of Congress don't like the bill they passed in August.

Lawmakers Aim to Stop Defense Cuts if Debt Panel Fails

WASHINGTON — As pessimism mounted this week over the ability of a bipartisan Congressional committee to agree on a deficit-reduction plan, lawmakers began taking steps to head off the large cuts in Pentagon spending that would automatically result from the panel’s failure.

As talks sputtered, one panel member publicly lamented that the process was not working, and the group was chastised by a bipartisan group of budget experts at a public hearing for failing to show progress. Several members of Congress, especially Republicans on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, are readying legislation that would undo the automatic across-the-board cuts totaling nearly $500 billion for military programs, or exchange them for cuts in other areas of the federal budget.

All of the congress including the president's pay and benefits should be stopped until this is resolved. I wish more people would speak out for this.

    I disagree with that 200%!!!

Why should a congressman have his pay stopped when he is trying to legitimately cut the budget?

The problem is that every congressman truly wants to cut the budget except for those programs that are his "baby", or something that directly effects constituents in his district.

Now, what I would recommend is that for any $ bill that is to be passed - it would have to list the constitutional amendment that applies.

Then lets get rid of some true fat - (I'm starting a new thread on that)

Of course, they'll change it. It was a set up deal from the beginning.

Who is "they"? Previous Congressman? how about the current freshman - esp those endorsed by tea party activists?

and here is another problem. Often expenditures are tagged on another bill that has nothing to do with it. For example, lets say the Air Force needs to buy 20 new planes, but it is the last paragraph of a bill that would authorized abortions in a military hospital. So if you vote against abortion your opponent will say you voted against aircraft needed for the Air Force.
(I'm in a rush at the moment, can anyone think of an actual case)

Because the system has become corrupted and flawed, all of them. If what i said was done they would start to get things done.

And by what constitutional means would you stop their pay?
