Nah - We don't use hymnals and stuff. We have contemporary music where we do our own charts and stuff and then for hymns we use the old hymnal that we have but all of it is projected on the screen by moi!! :D

At home we also like contemporary stuff. :)

Personally not thrilled with 95% of the "same-old, same-old" sound and music. Garlocks and son-in-law Hamilton have a dated sound and little originality or variety.

Like some songs and sing them but not much use for most.

No. I've never heard of it. What is it? A hymn book? A publisher of Christian hymnbooks?

It's a whole publishing house, by one of the largest anti-CCM/rock movements, from the BJU area. So yes, everything reflects that same style (a sort of light classical, or something), which they believe defines "godliness". Sacred Music Services is another one from that circle.

That's pretty much mainstream old-line fundamentalism. You can even see this in John of Japan's brother's book on the Rice family.

I see them mentioned a lot.

Thing is, they're not KJVO, which is a movement that has seemed to take over a lot of that brand of fundamentalism.

I have purchased from Majesty in the past....what specifically did you need to know? We are doing a Ron Hamilton Christmas cantata at my church, as a matter of fact.

On this board, does conservative and fundamental in scriptures also dictate all manor of modern feel good flesh oriented fluff offered by the casual worship settings of the modern church is acceptable?

I think what he meant was something like this:
On the Baptist Board, can people who count themselves "conservative and fundamental" in regard to their belief in the scriptures, also accept all manner of modern, feel-good, flesh-oriented fluff offered by the casual worship settings seen in some churches nowadays?
I am sure agedman will correct me if I'm wrong on this. :)

Conservative and fundamental in the Scriptures also allows for modern worship music to be acceptable in the church. Not all contemporary worship music is "feel good flesh oriented fluff offered by the casual worship setting of the modern church".

    what criteria do you use?

I read many years ago (so, I don't have documentation) that C.H. Spurgeon used to keep his eye on the congregational singing and, if he noticed that it was becoming emotional, he would have the music changed or end the music.

How much more fleshly is much of the music of this day in comparison to his!

Philip Bliss was concerned that people were too emotionally driven by the music of the camp meetings of his day. (again, I am too old to spend my time looking for the documentation) Do you know that, for each line of poetry that Philip Bliss would write, he would document the doctrine beside that verse by at least one scripture reference?

I am not opposed to music, nor am I opposed to new songs being written.

What I am concerned about is the quality and spirituality, and especially the thinking that music is to "prepare the hearts for worship" and in some other manner appeal to the folks in a manner as to tease out feelings of the presence of the Holy Spirit when such action really is no better than those who got drunk when the church assembled for the sacraments.

Yet Spurgeon was one of the more emotional preachers of his day. In fact, he often got flack from the hyper-calvinists that was trying to convince people to be saved, when they believe only God could do that.

That is not a bad idea. But even Philip Bliss' most famous hymn evokes strong emotions...based on truth. Emotions are not bad things, it is only when emotions take us away from truth rather than emphasize it.

I'm Glad to hear it, because I wrote a song 2 years ago based on Hebrews 1...

I think we are all concerned about these things. We just need to be careful to not set requirements that the Bible does not set. It is very difficult to make a hard and fast rule about what defines acceptable or non-acceptable music, because as soon as you do someone will find an exception...either way.
