This is for those that prefer the KJV and maybe some KJVO folks. What is most commonly sung in your church gatherings -- the old hymns or more contemporary fare?

I would identify "old" as being from before 1850. Therefore the more modern songs would be post 1850.

Perhaps you'll respond with "It's a pretty even blend of the two types." Anyway,I'd like to hear what is common in your gatherings.

I guess I would have to say "early modern"? I'd normally not consider things like Fanny Crosby hymns really modern, but they were post 1850, so that's why I say "early modern".

Our church uses "Soul Stirring Songs & Hymns" edited by John R. Rice. I think the most recent song in that book was written in 1952. If it's not in that book we don't sing it as a congregation.

I do chuckle as I sing lyrics with olde English suffixes on them and all the Thee's and Thou's.

    Why? They're beautiful hymns.

There are songs in that book much newer than 1952. John R. Rice himself did not really start writing songs until the '60's, and there are some of his songs in it as well as others from family members such as Joy Martin. The hymbook is copyright 1972, so I'm sure there are songs in it from right up until it was published. It was revised in 1989, and there are probably new songs in the revision too.

The truth is, IFB music people are writing new songs all the time, so the "old hymns" phrase in the OP doesn't really apply. At our recent mission annual meeting, my wife and I sang in the choir, and only one of the songs was familiar to us. In Japan a new IFB hymnbook was recently published with all new colloquial translations (the Japanese evangelical hymnbook is in mostly classical Japanese) and many new songs, including two brand new choruses by yours truly.

They are great hymns, but I would never use Thee or Thou in any other setting, so it is kind of incongruous.

I defer to your knowledge of the situation. I should have said, "I haven't noticed any songs newer than 1952", as I haven't looked at the dates of all the hymns in that hymnal, just the ones that we sing.

We do a mix. The older, more traditional hymns are sung on Sunday mornings, with the special music being "newer" songs. Sunday and Wednesday evenings we do newer music.
