Isaiah 40:2 What is gong on here?

    This is a very perplexing verse. It reads:

    What does the word "double" mean here?
    Is it double punishment?
    Is it double blessings?
    Is God apologizing for overdoing the punishment?

    What is going on here?

    The passage, in my view, is not clear at all on this.

    No. God is telling Israel that even tho He is punishing her for her disobedience, that it will be forgiven and He is comforting her. The double that Israel received could refer to the 70 yrs in exile in Babylon, but I'm not sure. Israel was sentenced to 70 yrs exile because she had not obeyed the Sabbath.

    Edit: I need to check some commentaries on the double part you asked about.

    Weren't there 2 exiles? The Babylonian and also the Assyrian? So that would be double portion. We should also remember that the Lord does not punish out of anger and wanting to do something mean, but to bring us back to Him. After the Babylonian Exile, Israel never worshipped idols again. I think that was the point of the exile in Babylon. So the double punishment ended up being a blessing!
