When is drinking wine a sin?
I know some Baptist believe drinking of wine is sin altogether, and others see it as sin only when one becomes intoxicated.

What is your understanding of the definition of wine?

I'm wanting to see the opinions of both sides.

    Thanks, but No Thanks....

....I'm waiting for the glass of water to trun to wine! When that happens, I'll know it's okay to drink

Actually, I'd love a glass of wine once in the while, but, medications forbid indulging. I would have to say that drinking is up to the person and their use of prayful moderation.

This should be an intersting post, but, it may have receieved more input had you asked about beer, too!

I did think about adding beer to this, but I think most of the debate is around wine. Some see wine as alcoholic and others as just grape juice. Some see no problem with a little drink from time to time as long as one does not get drunk and others believe you are on your way to hell for the first nip.

I'm sure this has been debated many times, but from what I see everything else has to and it doesn't look like it will change. I personally have never gotten in the middle of any debates on wine, but it somewhat came up week before last in Sunday school so it got me to wondering how others here see it.

For the most part I prefer the mellow reds--Merlot, Barbera and Zinfadel. They're much better if made in white oak containers than in the more modern stainless steel. I don't care for fruity or spicy flavors hiding out in my wine like you tend to find in Sangiovese, Malbec and Syrah. On the whole I'm partial to those wines that come from the Napa Valley in California.

There are 247 references to alcohol in Scripture. Let Scripture define what you are asking.

Jesus turned water into fermented wine, so I'm going to go with the idea that it is not a sin to drink it. John 2:10.

God will serve us the best, fermented wine at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, so I'm going to go with the idea that it is not a sin to drink it. Isaiah 25:6

So there are two instances in scripture where God supplied the wine. If it were a sin to drink it, would God give it to us?

Getting drunk is the sin, not drinking a glass of wine.

Wine in our culture is by simple definition grape juice that has some consecration of alcohol in it because of fermentation. Drinking wine in itself does not constitute sin if we do not get drunk off it. We know drunkenness is sin. We are told in Eph. 5:18
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.
The question arises what constitutes drunkenness? I would say it does not take someone who is stumbling all over themselves. Drunkenness is when a person no longer has 100% of their faculties. The degree of the drunkenness just rises from there. My guess is that when any amount has impaired our ability even in the smallest way to make sound judgments we would be considered to be in a state of drunkenness.
Evidence could be giddiness, feeling a sense of being relaxed, increased talkativeness, light headedness, and other things. If the drink causes any change in us then we are under its influence and I would think considered drunk when we are suppose to be under the influence of the Spirit 100% and not the wine. So at the point we are not 100% under the influence of the spirit, because of self indulgence, but instead under some other influence we would be in sin and that would include any alcoholic beverage.

So any reaction physiologically is sin? So much for medications.

Scripture defines drunk and FAL's rendering is not even close.

The problem I have with drinking alcohol is that it can give a bad light to some. If someone drinks at home, that's their business. Now, if someone in your church was recently saved, and they saw you drinking wine, they may drink one, too. Is it wise to drink in front of a previous alcoholic? I think not. But, it's none of my business what anyone does. To each their own.

Jesus turned water in fermented Wine, as the Jews did drink the fruit of the vine in OT times....

Would say this fits under preference/conviction issue, if one feels that it is wrong, it would be sin for them to do it,,,
If one felt God ok it in moderation, as long as did not drink to excess, ok for them...

other question here is how do we handle believers in same church/group holding opposite viewpoints on this OP?

    Good advice, I'll take it.

This ends this discussion as far as I'm concerned.

So I think our conclusion is clear:

    Wine is YUMMY.

    So is beer.

And so is an occasional Maker's Mark sour.

Or a warm Grand Marnier neat on a cold day.

Are you convicted to abstain from drinking? By all means, don't do it.

But shut your mouth. Those of us with "strong faith" in this matter aren't doing anything wrong by responsibly consuming.

Actually your stance in itself is sin. It is the same attitude that Cain had, "am I my brother's keeper?" The answer is yes. Anything we do that causes the faith of another to be harmed is sin and the attitude I will do as I wish as long as I feel no conviction is sin when it disregards the faith of another.
What you are talking about is not strong faith, but strong rebellion masking itself as faith.

Check out the book of Romans to understand what I mean by "strong faith."

And I have the real Holy Spirit, so I don't need the conviction of an impostor.

What does that have to do with anything? Are you saying I'm not a good little Baptist boy because I enjoy an occasional drink?
