    I am sure the working poor really appreciate this comment.

    So, give the janitorial jobs to the kids and fire the working poor from some of the jobs they can be hired to do.

    "Really poor neighborhoods with no habits of working and no one around them works."

    Code words for Black neighborhoods.

    While Mr Gringrich has little moral standards but not everything he says is wrong. I agree with his assessment about children of those who live on social benefits. Certainly it would not apply to every single instance, but it is true in an overwhelming amount of the time. As the bible says;
    Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.
    Many children grow up learning that a hand out is easier then working and they live their lives as did their parents did. I agree with this man on the issue.

    Newt's exactly right, but a statesman would know how to get Dems to admit it. Where are the statesmen?

    The "child labor laws" are excessive and unnecessary. I held my first tax paying job when I was 13. Nothing wrong with that. Working is a good thing.

    No, and you know I did not imply that. But Newt implied that all inner city kids are interested only in criminal activity. Of course he is giving 'red meat' to his conservative ******* audience that he is trying to sway to his corner.

    He insulted all hard work poor people. He insulted all inner city African Americans.

    I knew that when I posted the OP that it would bring the ******* out of the woodwork.

    My first job was thinning peaches for 35 cents per hour. My brother was older and he got a whole 60 cents per hour. I guess Newt does not know about folk who work hard and get little.

    I could have miss-understood, but I thought he was speaking of children of parents who are on public assistance for most if not all their lives, not people who work and have little.

    ==I started working at 15 and I have worked ever since (i'm now 36). However the child labor laws are there for a very good reason. Employers cannot be given a "free hand" when it comes to the conditions in which children work and the hours they work. Laws must be in place to prevent the abuses that occurred years ago.

    There are problems with children working too much. I liked the old days when children worked during the summer and went to school during the school year.

    Yes very true that labor laws are needed. We were very poor and I had to start work when I was 10. By the time I was 12 I was working along with lumber jacks 12 hours a day for 1 dollar a day. At the time I thought I was in tall cotton just to be working.

    The current laws in place are excessive. A 13 year old should be able to be employed part time. They should be able to have a paper route and mow lawns.

    There is no labor laws that I know of keeping 13 year olds from having a paper route or mowng lawns.

    In NY, a boy must be at least 11 years old to deliver newspaper - but there are many, many restrictions - so many that I don't even see any papers boys any more. and these rules apply to paperboys up to the age of 17


    Here is a list of occupations that youths may NOT participate in

    I could not find anything specific on mowing lawns - but I believe you must be at least 14 to operate a power lawn mower (does anyone actually have the old push mower anymore?)

    Really?!? I was raised below the poverty line & I always had jobs to feed my brother & sister.....& mom worked when she could....all without a father. Newt could go jump in a lake.

    how bout selling drugs to other kids in schools.....sure beats the chump change jobs. Parents may even approve....subliments their own incomes. aint America great!

    Crabtownboy, just because the truth is ugly doesnt change it.

    Ignoring the problems of our entitlement oriented society will never solve the problems.

    I am guessing from your judgement in your post that you have never spent any time in Memphis, Little Rock, Atlanta or Birmingham. Go visit the "hoods" there, it might open your eyes. (That is, if they let you leave there alive)

    Yes, and Newt's bigotry seems acceptable among far too many in our society.

    Oh, I've been in Atlanta, Memphis, DC, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, etc., etc., etc. Been in Rio, various cities in China, Russia, Europe, Central America, etc. I've been in peasant villages in China.

    I have spent a lot of time in Appalachia.

    I have seen hard working poor in all these places. I have seen lazy people on all these places.

    But Newt lumps all the poor city folk into one group, i.e. the lazy and criminal. This is an insult to all those who are honest and are working hard and yet are poor.

    I do not understand conservatives and fundamentalists who claim to be Christian and yet dispise others so much. Have you no sympathy for those who work hard and are poor?
