Favorite Christmas Food

    What was the best thing you had to eat this Christmas? You may only choose ONE to say and describe!

    For me, it was mashed potatoes. They were made with cream and sauteed leeks. The creaminess combined with the lumps of potato, then the bursts of flavor provided by the leeks really turned out pretty tasty. I'm normally not going to do backflips over mashed taters, but if I coulda, I woulda over these ones. Sadly, they are now extinct, so until next time, the fond memories are all that remain.

    Seriously?

    I've tried to eat it before in a Chinese restaurant, though not baked. It's not my thing. It would do if there wasn't anything else about though.

    Why would one bake an eel? The only way I've seen them is bought live and cooked to order. Swimming in the tank one minute, floating on a saucy plate the next.

    I was kind of partial to the rolls. We haven't had rolls at Christmas or Thanksgiving in a number of years as my grandmother always used to make them and bring them. THEY WERE YUMMY!

    Anyways, since she stopped cooking a long time ago and passed away a few years ago, we haven't homemade yeast rolls in quite some time.

    Well, last Friday, my 74-year-old dad went to town and walked into the deli at Brookshires and said to the woman working there, "Lady, I'm looking for some yeast rolls like my mother used to make." She said, "Well, you can forget that! Nobody cooks like that anymore!"

    But she did tell him what aisle to find the bread on and she suggested a particular type of roll that came close. And all you had to do was to brown them a little as they were already cooked.

    I must say - (even though I don't know the name brand) - they were very, very good!

    I'm not sure I can pick just one, but if forced I think it would have to be Sweet Potato Souffle. The kind with the crunchy pecan topping....sigh.....

    Huh? I figured you would have had possum stew and nanner pudding :tongue3:

    I've not had any this year, but I always liked the Old Fashioned Creme Drops. I may have to run out and try to find some if the stores don't already have Valentines candy out already.

    I used to make home made bread, but the problem was that we ate it. All of it. LOL! So now I buy these frozen yeast rolls in a bag (Rhodes brand). You just take out however many you want, and let them thaw and rise, pop them in the oven, and presto--home made yeast rolls just like I would make myself. Really, really good, especially when you drizzle them with a little butter before you bake them.

    I'm so envious of women who can cook well. No one in my family picked up the fine art of cooking after my grandmothers passed.

    The only food I would love to have is English Pork Pie, but I have to go to England to get it.

    We don't eat much on Christmas Day; maybe a bowl of soup.

    pavlova with all the trimmings is the best of Christmas desserts when you are dying of humidity and heat

    I adore the potato salad that is a family tradition...with crumbled bacon etc,

    EEL.....run away screaming and gagging. I do not like the things at all if you had not guessed.

    Many years ago a brother spent Christmas in Laos with a female friend at her grandmother's house. She was very poor and Buddhist. To honour Christmas for a Christian friend of her beloved granddaughter she had a tin of John West Sardines in oil.....cost her a months income . Martin was quite overcome by her generosity .....isn't that beautiful, I think so anyway!

    The fruitcake I made in November brought up from the tin in the basement.
    This fruitcake bears NO resemblance to that bought in stores. Wouldn't give that stuff houseroom.
    Mine is my grandmom's recipe - secret liquid ingredient - kosher concord grape wine.

    Oh come on now Debby, share that recipe! I hate fruitcake because of that alcohol taste, but there's this very generic version, very cheap, someone once bought at a GAS STATION, haha, and I tried it and really liked it!
