I have had low paying jobs call me up. They would pay better than unemployment, but at the same time there is no way I am gonna pay off my Credit Card debt and other debts with such an income or it would take decades. Numerous times on the Dave Ramsey Show and also on Crown's old Money Matters a caller would call up with such a income to debt ratio and the caller was told to increase their income by finding a better paying job.
Such a career is out there and will take time. If I take a low paying job it would be very very difficult to get a interview for a better job, specially since I would be working day hours. I had this problem at my latest job many many times. I had good tech support jobs, and other type of jobs pass me by because we were working 10 hours a day 5-6 days a week, and they would not let me off to interview! So what should I do? Continue to collect unemployment, or take a low paying job? I am gonna pray for the Lord's guidance. Unemployment would be enough to make min payment but thats it.

Overall I really want a career with a better income and more satisfaction so I can pay back my debts. As Dave Ramsey would say I have a income or career crisis.

OK - So you already have credit card debt, are on unemployment and you are looking to travel to visit a woman you have never met - and will charge the hotel on your credit card? You keep speaking Dave Ramsey yet you do not listen to him apparently.

Get a job. Plain and simple. You have not gotten a higher paying job not because you had a low paying job and couldn't go for the interviews but because you were not hired. Be a man, take a job, cut your expenses and pay down your obligation to your debt. Do not suck off of other people with continuing unemployment when you CAN get a job.

Only you can work your balance sheet. If unemployment will continue paying the bills until such a time that you get a job more in line with what you're looking for, okay. But you have to decide how long you'll continue getting unemployment, and determine your "if I don't have such a job by this date" line-in-the-sand.

How about working 2 low-paying jobs?

I'm looking at retirement from my current job in the next year or two; I'm already looking at "next career" jobs. If I can't get what I'm looking for, I'm prepared to work convenience stores and double shifts, if that's what it takes to continue paying the bills.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I have had to make the same decision, and I made the decision to get off unemployment and to take a lower paying job.

From a business prospective, once you are unemployed for 6 months then people don't want to interview/hire you. There is a 6 month discrimination that is very much alive in our current work environment. Businesses think that if you are unemployed for 6 months or more, there is something wrong with you. Get a job.

Secondly, if you take a job you do not have to put it on your resume. I am in that situation where I am working with a company on a contract basis but have chosen to not list it for fear that people may assume it is a permanent position and be reluctant to allow me contract work.

Finally, if you are unemployed you cannot turn down employment. Those are the rules and if you break those rules then you are violating the unemployment agreement. In other words, you must take the job or risk forfeiting your unemployment.

John, you have to have a job to get a job is my advise. Also there isnt really allot out there but I dont want to be pessimistic. Get a smart phone you can carry with you on the job & that should allow you access to web sites so you can continue your search @ lunches & breaks. BTW ....you can buy a Smart Phone for $100.00 @ Walmart thru Virgin Mobile & pay 35-45 dollars a month for Pay as you Go service.

But.....yes pray & Pray......without God, who are any of us?

Let me add one more thing. While looking for a job volunteer somewhere. You can use it on your resume and there will not be a gap in your employment history. Yes, it is a volunteer position, but sometimes these end up in full time employment. I knew a person who could not find a job for 9 months and took this advise. After a short time, he was given a job with the organization. I also know someone who used this as a way of preventing employment gaps. This worked wonders in getting past the employment discrimination that exists for people out of work for 6 months or more.

Remember, most of the jobs out there are "hidden", so volunteering can help you find the hidden job market.

By the way: Don't know how much you're getting in unemployment; but you have to ask yourself if the "low-paying job" will still be more than what you're getting in unemployment.

Possibly true from some perspectives. I already volunteer at my church. I have volunteered outside of my church before and it never led to any job, so what you say may be true depending on the circumstances and employer.

I learned from the unemployment office that if I turn down a job due to trying to get me to work on sundays on a regular basis, or offering me lower wages, then its okay as I am not turning down the job, I am just turning down the offer. I have turned down a few due to sundays, low wages, or unreasonable travel distance for a very low wage.
