    And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the gentiles,
    whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
    And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all:
    and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:
    Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any
    of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwelling places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them:
    so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
    And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments,
    and observe my statutes, and do them.
    And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt;
    and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children forever:
    and my servant David shall be their prince forever.
    Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them:
    and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.

    is David actually a name for the messiah Jesus to be reigning over future isreal at His second coming?

    is this a future fulfillment, or do we take it symbolically, and it already established in the church?

    King David was long, long dead when Ezekiel was written.

    David = beloved -- Hebrew: H1732
    ... as in "this is my BELOVED Son"

    "And Beloved, my servant, shall be King over them" - Ezek 37:24a

    We wouldn't refer to the Jews as having "two kingdoms" today. When would they have lost those separate designations (Israel/Judah)?

    That is because this prophecy is in the process of being fulfilled as we speak:

    The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
    Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions:
    then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
    And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.
    - Ezekiel 37:15-17

    The NATION of Israel was formed in 1948 in according to the plan and purpose of God in fulfilling HIS Covenant with (genetic) Israel.

    Was there some point in time, prior to 1948, when the Jews began to no longer see themselves as members of a Northern or Southern kingdom? I think so. What about tribal designations? Do they still regard themselves as members of a particular tribe or did that go by the way side somewhere in history? I'm asking because I think these things are important to the reformulation of Israel as God's people under a national covenant.

    They were persecuted as a people for 2,000 years during the diaspora so, for the most part, they were forced to simply identify themselves as Jews as they were identified by others as well.
    The Northern Kingdom essentially ceased to exist following the Assyrian conquest; however, the kingdom of Judah had inhabitants from all the tribes.

    The entire human genome has been mapped, it's just a matter of reading it.
    For $1,000 anyone can now get a complete map of their genome.
    It's just a matter of time before tribal ethnic differentiations (markers) will be identifiable, as I'm sure that Israeli's are already working on this.
    Identifying your genetic background has been important in Israel for a long time in order to identify those who qualify for immigration to Israel.
    Anyone with the last name of Cohen is already considered of the tribe of Levi and eligible to serve in the priesthood.
    As far as I understand, all the implements of the Temple and the clothing of the priests have been recreated for use at a later date.
    Anyway, as a famous Bible scholar once told me, God knows those who are from each of the twelve tribes.
