Anybody who asks a good man like Dr. York to pray needs to know he won't pull his punches. Especially on an issue like this one.

I don't take much of Kentucky seriously...just read the oath their governor has to take...

Good for him. We have more casino's/bars in our town than any other business. They, like the lottery, are little more than a tax on the poor.

You're right about Hershel York but so wrong about the rest of your statement. Actually every public officer of any rank in Kentucky has to take that oath, and reading a little history would help you to understand why our constitutional oath of office includes swearing that we have never fought a duel with deadly weapons.

I take it that there are no BB members that take the oath of office in Kentucky.

I don't agree with what the pastor did. I love a good prayer that convicts not a prayer that rebukes.

There are bigger fish to fry than issues in a secular society. The opinions of those issues have changed over the years too. It was not too many years ago that some Baptists were against the stock market. Seems to me that quite a number including pastors and those investors who handle retirement money do this now. Not many seem to even question that any more.

Some things never change. That it what we must focus on. Eternal things are far more important than political and economic issues.

I would challenge that pastor to stop supporting the Muslims by refusing to buy petroleum for his vehicles. I would also challenge him to stop putting pollutants in the air by driving a vehicle. I would also challenge him to eat less so he can give more to those who have less. The challenges could be almost endless.

Do you have any examples from scripture you could give of prayer that convicts.

Those poli-tic-ens (many blood suckers) in Kentucky just need to get over it all.

In North Carolina we have the Education Lottery. Yes indeed. What a joke!

How this works is that if 100 grand is provided to any School District that amount of money is then deducted from the budget otherwise slated for said School District. This 100 grand is then available for Bubba, first cousin of the Director of the State DOT, for widening some turn lane in and around Raleigh which then provides for some poli-tic-en to take credit for it all which garners more votes for their re-election.

    ...trickle down.

As for Scripture, consider..., "Thou Shalt Not Steal".

My friend. The Holy Spirit convicts me, and one of the ways He does is through prayer.

While I personally may disagree with how Bro. Hershel York couched some sort of "political agenda" within the context of a prayer, I do admire him for making it public on how he stood on those issues.

I knew Hershel York when he was quite young due to the fact that his father, Wallace York, was dean of the Bible college from which I graduated in 1976 (Clarksville Baptist College, Clarksville TN [An educational ministry of Bible Baptist Church in Clarksville]). Wallace York was one individual whom I highly respected, and I'm sure that much of what Hershel York came to be was due in large part to the godly heritage of his father.

I'm glad to see that those law makers in the Blue Grass State still open their sessions in prayer. I just wonder how long it will be until groups like the ACLU or the Freedom From Religion Foundation sue the states for allowing prayer in their assemblies. Heaven knows that they sure need it!

Why is it that Governor Beshear, an invited guest (and son of a preacher), may spend much of his budget message before the Legislature advocating expansion of casino gambling, and Hershel York, also an invited guest (and son of a preacher), may not oppose it?

Rev. Hershael is not just the son of a preacher.

    He's now a Prophet:

Do you think that says anything about the work of the churches in your city?

The Holy Spirit grabs my attention when pray but I see no reason for a pastor to preach during prayer time and then preach again in the sermon and the closing prayer. Certainly the woman whose husband just died needs conviction when she is struggling with God and asking "Why?" She needs comfort and knowing that God is there for her and He will see her through it.

The pastor of the church I attend goes around the congregation during the singing which lasts about one hour and meets and greets people. The associate pastors lead in prayer and makes some announcement during that time. During that time he prays for people when he greets them. I have never seen that before but it has quite an impact. He shows care fore the body by also caring for individuals. He is one of the most real people I know. At one time he was a rebel in the city and was in business later. Today he is one of the most respected men in the city. He was born here, and then went to a Bible school. He returned and planted a church which is doing well.

I don't understand why they have prayer to begin with. Prayer is a special privilege belonging to those who belong to Christ. It shouldn't be used to baptize political assemblies.

I am sympathetic to his opinions, but not the way he voiced them.

I know Dr. York personally. He is both a friend and was my preaching professor at Southern Seminary.

He prayed in a similar way last year and raised the same sort of flap in the liberal press, yet they invited him back this year to pray again.

He is SOLIDLY evangelical and FOR the gospel. Even though he is a full time seminary professor he is also a full time pastor and he pulls no punches when it comes to taking a stand for the gospel.

He is not afraid to pray the Scriptures before the Kentucky legislature -- who need to hear the Scriptures as much as any other man or woman alive. After having lived in Kentucky for the past 15 years I can say that Dr. York is RIGHT ON THE MARK with his prayer efforts.

    I highly support him!
