Prayer please - migraine starting and every sign it will go full blown any minute, which is an ER visit. My usual prevention methods aren't working.

    Wow - That's great that it's gone!!

Hey Gina - Are you on Topamax? I just started it a week ago and while I've not had a migraine (am in that part of my cycle where I don't have them), I'm not sure I'm liking the side effects. I'll have to see how it does through the next few weeks of my cycle and if it cuts down on the pain though.

Bumping it up, fighting a weather-triggered one for the last few days, getting progressively worse today, but I do get lulls and have one now, they last between 1-30 minutes, but sometimes it never comes back which would be nice, but the aura is still there so I doubt this is the end. Got three more days of work and really praying I can go in by morning.

Ann, I took Topamax before in another state. First the neurologist put me on Depakote and that knocked them out, but I developed an allergy and he took me down off that while going onto Topamax, (I also combined the migraine diet as part of it) and didn't have one while on that either, then I moved out of state to an area where migraines just weren't an issue so haven't taken anything since. I had a couple light ones out there, but none that required a doctor.

Then moved here...this is Hades for migraines, but I haven't gone in migraine meds yet. I need to renew a referral to the neurologist, not sure if my doc will do it since he doesn't really "believe" in migraines and laughed and said it was silly when I mentioned that full moons are also a major trigger. Also knocked the migraine diet when I asked for help figuring out proper nutrition while on it. Ugh.

It sounds like you have cluster headaches with a migraine aspect to them. Regular migraines go on FOREVER but the cluster headaches last for much shorter periods of time (like you said - 1-30 minutes is typical) but then occur in great frequency then leave like it never happened.

I tried the Topamax - never again. I STILL can't find words and I've been off of it for a month. It was a horrible medication for me with my memory and it just wasn't worth it to me. I'd rather have a migraine, if you can believe it!!

My friend wrote a book on headaches and migraines if you want to see if you library can get it - or you can get it yourself. Her name is Lisa Morrone and the book is Overcoming Headaches and Migraines. She's a physical therapist who has helped many patients with migraines. She's decreased the number and severity of mine by dealing with some physical issues in my neck and skull and in her book, she addresses some exercises and posture things that have been super helpful as well. :) I know her book is on Amazon and if you want to look at her site it's www.lisamorrone.com She has some free resources on there as well.

I've taken several things as preventatives. I did not like Topamax - Ron called that my manic period. YUCK! I haven't liked any of them though. Most just have too many (and rather severe) side effects.

B-2 and magnesium was the ticket for me. Took a while to get the dosage just right but it was worth it. I also have given up caffeine and artificial sweeteners. Both of those helped greatly.

Nothing to do about the weather though, but the above has helped the severity when I can't control the conditions.

Here is a part of just one of many articles (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/migraine-headache-000072.htm)

A friend loaned me a little book about magnesium and B2 when I was at my wits end with preventatives that were making me crazy. I take 800 mg of magnesium and 400 of B2. I get both from the Vitamin Shoppe. I read somewhere early to take magnesium with an -ate on the end (like magnesium citrate verses magnesium oxide).

search for "b-2 & magnesium for migraines" and you'll get more than you can read ;)

Nope, definitely migraines. Went through the process with the neuro...and they almost always start out as almost a severe, tiny area towards the back of the left side of my head. I've had cluster and tension headaches on occasion. They are LOVELY in comparison.

The 1-30 minutes is the BREAK I sometimes get during them. They last hours, days, at at my worst, may not fully go away for an entire month. They had me incapacitated at one point in my life years ago.
They seem to be moving back towards that degree now and it is very scary. I was so out of it at that point that I was suicidal and not because I wanted to be...after so long in that much pain, I was confused and didn't know what I was doing. The one time I put myself in severe danger, I honestly was only trying to stop the migraine and to me, what I did made sense. I wasn't trying for suicide, I was trying for distraction from pain and it seemed as if getting hit by a truck might do that.
The other time they thought it was a suicide attempt was simply not knowing where I was or what I was doing. I was told later and didn't have any recollection of it.

I try not to live in fear, but when I sit here feeling it getting back to how it used to be, it's hard not to. For some reason, Darvocet, if taken the moment I felt one coming, would often prevent it from going full blown and at least keep me out of the ER. Now that they took that off the market, I have found nothing else that will so it's back to the neurologist.

Thanks for explaining the pain that you suffer with migraines!
I will be praying for you and that your neurologist will be able to find a medication/treatment that will help in reliving you of pain!
    Bless your heart!!

Gonna have to give that a try.

Although I feel rather weird, like one day I'm going to be known as one of the grassroots members of the NPC. (neon pee club)
