I have been in this area for almost 5 years. I have walked that street many many times. There is no way in the world I am gonna get my bike on that road (where people drive very very fast) regardless of what the law says, its just not common sense. People on that road drive very very very fast. The sidewalk is not all that populated by ppl on that road and its 20 times safer to ride my bike there.

I was actually riding around the block so it made no sense to get on the other side. And even if I did, the only way across was about a quarter of a mile exists a walking bridge where I would have to carry my bike up the stairs and across. There was technically a crosswalk on a earlier street, but there was no pedestrian light walking button, and I have seen drivers completely violate the cross many many times.

Since this is what I have seen there was no way in the world I was gonna get my bike or me on that crosswalk where there is no walking light and I have seen drivers violate that space numerous times.

Thank you. Oh yes He was alright. The bike shop owner said that he has seen many dead after such an accident.

Thank you. Yeah I will bike but never again will I bike on that street and only will bike on the side roads. Common sense dictates that riding my bike on such a street where there is no bike lane, and people drive through crosswalks, and drive very very fast would be 20 times unsafer than riding on the sidewalk where almost no one walks down.

I understand that common sense and the law dont always correlate. So if this is the case I wont ride my bike ever again on that road. I have seen other bikers on the sidewalk as well on that street and others here. They also agree that common sense dictates not to ride on the road on that street.

Yeah depends on the street. In San Francisco I biked on the road because the sidewalk was filled with pedestrians, and cars do not drive all that fast on the road, and there are other bikers there. However on the road I was on, ppl drive almost as fast there as on the freeway.

I am glad you are okay first of all.

As a pedestrian I find it very dangerous to share the footpath (sidewalk) with cyclist. Therefore as cyclist I only use the road unless I walk the bike. Cyclists and pedestrians are not a good mix and as your story proves cycling on the sidewalk can be very dangerous. The problem most cyclists get into on the road is getting too far out into traffic. If you stay on the far right (left here) and exercise caution there is no reason not to cycle on the road.

Saying that, motorists need to be much more aware of cyclists on the road. We all need to walk, cycle, and drive defensively and cautiously and not be so concerned about our 'rights'.

Well, you got hit on the sidewalk, so obviously the sidewalk isn't very safe.

Car speed has nothing to do with how safe a cyclist is. The roads I typically travelled had speeds of 45 to 55 mph and I was fine. The more dangerous places are where there are lower speeds because it means there is the need for lower speed such as more stores, more pedestrians or more homes. Then you have to be more careful. But get an open road with a speed limit of 55 and a nice shoulder and I'm in bike heaven! Until there is a dead skunk that I didn't see.......

Years ago when I rode competitively I was out riding and went down a small mountain. As I went up the mountain a car passed me and then part way down I passed him. Can you imagine what he must have thought about a cyclist going about 60mph past him. Another time I did the same thing coming down a steeper mountain except this time I was going faster. There were other times when I for behind a car and a bus. Those were fun times.

Not really. I was on the sidewalk but the sidewalk did not extend on the concrete where the car pulled out of.

My roommate spoke to a police officer whom is in his Bible study. According to him it may be a 50-50 situation. The driver was not paying attention and even he admitted to that. He hit me either from behind or on the side, so he will be at fault which he himself admitted.

Imagine this. A driver is not paying attention and drives on the sidewalk and creams a biker to the afterlife. The news media gets involved. Would the driver be innocent or guilty? By SC law the biker is guilty, but the news media exposes the driver, and even he himself admits he was wrong for not paying attention.

I think I am gonna take a run down there and take photos which may be helpful when I go to court. I think I am gonna use my digital camera for this one and avoid using the phone.
