Searching For a Particular Book on Heretics

I am searching for a book on heresies that I bought in the mid-80s from a clearance shelf at book store. It was unique in that gave a history of all Christian heresies through the ages from a sympathetic view. The premise of the book was that the motives of the people who started the heresies where good even if their teachings were flawed. I considered the book to be a treasure as a reference book because it was fair to each heresy and gave context and reasons why and how the heresies were formed. Unfortunately, I loaned it out and now I have no idea where it is.

I though the name of the book was "Heretics" , but Google is coming back with more recent or much older books by those names, and none that are as comprehensive as the volume I am looking for. The book by G.K. Chesterton is not the one I am thinking of. The one I am looking for was laid out in chronological order and explains each one, their founders and the context from which they sprang up. The author made a point to hide his Church affiliation, though I presume he was a protestant of some stripe.

Any help would be appreciated.

 

That isn't it but this one looks interesting too. The one I am looking for would have started with Judaizers and Gnosticism, and would have included Origen's heresy, Montanists, Donatists, Arianism, on up through Cathars, Anabaptists, Waldensians and so on. (please forgive the spelling)
