What Are You Now Paying for Gas...

A month ago it was $3.29, now it is $3.61. I'm in Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

Back on March 13, 1972 15 1/2 gallons cost you:

 

Last week we paid 3.23, this week 3.37 - upstate of South Carolina

 

We use about 5 days work salary a month to pay for gas.

So yep. We pay a ton for gas. The price here fluctuates so drastically that I can't give you a regular average. Today it is around $3.35 per gallon. DH has experienced the joy of the price going down just as he finished filling up the tank. We have one gas station, same chain, same name, that always charges 8-10 cents more on one side of town. I didn't know that was legal!

We both work and have five kids in three different schools. The schools do not provide transportation and there are no sidewalks, this is a high crime rate area, and there's tons of traffic since the road they'd have to go on goes all the way through this state. There's the constant sound of sirens so sending out kids to walk a minimum of 30 minutes while carrying heavy stuff and expensive musical instruments and art supplies isn't going to happen.

I'll never figure out what they have against sidewalks. It's crowded out here and tons of people could walk tons of places if they'd just put in sidewalks! Oddly enough, they have crosswalks. So they really do expect people to either walk on the road or through busy parking lots and once you get off those, you're walking down quieter roads, but then you have to jump off and walk through people's yards every time a car comes by. It's total weirdness. Maybe it's a plot by gas companies and car repair shops to make everyone drive more!

If you factor in inflation I bet you were paying more for a gallon of gas then than you do now. I believe gas was something like .15 cents a gallon when I was a kid. But then a good annual wage was something like $3000.00 a year and most did not earn that much where I lived. My salary on my first teaching job in 1964 was something like $3500.00 for the year.

I remember when a dime would buy you a soft drink and a candy bar.

Here in the south 'burbs of Chicago I pay around $3.69. A month ago it was around $3.32 a gallon.

If I buy gas in Indiana near my mom's house, it's currently around $3.47 a gallon. A month ago it was at $3.19 a gallon.

 

Gas was $3.42 in our area. Did not look this morning, but I expect it to rise sharply with the breaking news this morning from Iran (again).

I drive a 95 Dodge Diesel 4x4 truck every day for a 82 mile round trip commute. I burn up over $100 per week in fuel. It is worse because the overdrive is out on the truck and I cannot afford to replace the transmission right now (even though I do my own rebuilding, the parts for this model will cost me over $500). It still gets 16 mpg without OD, which is almost as good as our gas Trailblazer. With OD, that big lug of a behemoth vehicle will pull down 23 or better MPG. Diesel is currently $3.79 in my area. The place I purchase it is critical. Some fuel is horrid and the truck really suffers. The best fuel I can find is worth over 3 mpg to me.

Looking to purchase a motorcycle as soon as my tax returns hit.



Not THE most efficient bike, but at 45 mpg on gas, it would make a difference, and I love to go fast and far on two wheels. This older classic is my favorite bike of all time. Can't wait to get my hands on one. With over 125 horsepower and a 150+ top speed, this critter will git with the program, even with 2-up.

 

Had a doctor's appointment down in Port Arthur, Texas, where they cook the stuff. $3.45 a gal.

 

I paid 3.09 last week, I think it was 3.39 today.
