...and what were you paying just 30 days ago? Please tell us in which state you currently purchase gas! And what you and your family will have to cut back on to make penny's stretch.

For me, in Southern California, we are now paying $3.99 a gallon, whereas a month ago, it was $3.39 a gallon. That is a whopping sixty cent increase in 30 days, or an increase of two cents a day. :tear:

And the local restaurants (in my area) wonder why less people are eating out? I can tell them that it is partially due to the sixty cents a gallon rise in the cost of gas.

Before I retired, I averaged 40 gallons a week of gas to commute. If you multiply that times the sixty cents increase per gallon of gas, you can see why at least one fast-food meal for a family of four a Micky Ds is no longer a wise expenditure.

If the price goes up to the $5.00 range, in contrast to what I paid last month, even at 20 gallons of gas every other week, it means I must eliminate one sit-down meal (for my wife and I) or one fast food meal (for two) every week to compensate for the increase.

And I can't afford to trade in my payment free car for something smaller, because I can't afford a monthly payment! :BangHead:

Higher gas prices may be a mere drop in the bucket for the rich and famous (including Leno and Bill Maher who discussed how they were not in the catagorey of the 1% in this country), but for us average folk, and the majority of us retirees (accept those pulling down six figure incomes on retirement), it is a true hardship, and cuts in other areas of spending have to be made, which (like a ripple on a pond when a rock is skipped across its surface) has a trickle-down effect on other businesses and those they employ. :type:

One last question to ponder: Will the rise in gas prices bring an end to the recovery in this country? Furthermore, will it bring about another recession?

    THANKS!!!

    Memories!

You must be one of those who keep their receipts? That brought back memories. Both of low prices, and the mimpending gas lines and rationing this nation was about to experience.

I can remember the day, when I'd sell my 50 Sunday LA Times papers, and with the 4 dollars, I earned, go to the local gas station and fill up my car (5 gallons for a buck) and get a burger at Bob's Big Boy, and still have some change left over for the week.

I was 17 years old, and the year was 1964!

We use about 5 days work salary a month to pay for gas.

So yep. We pay a ton for gas. The price here fluctuates so drastically that I can't give you a regular average. Today it is around $3.35 per gallon. DH has experienced the joy of the price going down just as he finished filling up the tank. We have one gas station, same chain, same name, that always charges 8-10 cents more on one side of town. I didn't know that was legal!

We both work and have five kids in three different schools. The schools do not provide transportation and there are no sidewalks, this is a high crime rate area, and there's tons of traffic since the road they'd have to go on goes all the way through this state. There's the constant sound of sirens so sending out kids to walk a minimum of 30 minutes while carrying heavy stuff and expensive musical instruments and art supplies isn't going to happen.

I'll never figure out what they have against sidewalks. It's crowded out here and tons of people could walk tons of places if they'd just put in sidewalks! Oddly enough, they have crosswalks. So they really do expect people to either walk on the road or through busy parking lots and once you get off those, you're walking down quieter roads, but then you have to jump off and walk through people's yards every time a car comes by. It's total weirdness. Maybe it's a plot by gas companies and car repair shops to make everyone drive more!

    According to Another Post...

...in some states, the cars come up on the sidewalks and can legally hit a person on a bike. Be careful of those sidewalks :laugh::laugh::thumbsup:

I was going to fill up after church (I know that is a sin) but it was $3.81, but I had to drive to Syracuse, as I was scheduled to work the car show Sun afternoon (I know another sin) - so in the city, it was $3.72. Both stations were Kwik Fill (United Refining Co)- which gives you 5 cents of per gallon when using the credit card. I pay by net, so there is no postage either.

With my new job, I am buying at least 15 gallons per week.
    - before it was about 9 gallons per week. - thats about a 60% increase.

Brother Paul, is that the same Bob's Big Boy that has the car show/rally every saturday night? I saw this a few months back on TV.

If you factor in inflation I bet you were paying more for a gallon of gas then than you do now. I believe gas was something like .15 cents a gallon when I was a kid. But then a good annual wage was something like $3000.00 a year and most did not earn that much where I lived. My salary on my first teaching job in 1964 was something like $3500.00 for the year.

I remember when a dime would buy you a soft drink and a candy bar.

Depends on where I buy it.

Here in the south 'burbs of Chicago I pay around $3.69. A month ago it was around $3.32 a gallon.

If I buy gas in Indiana near my mom's house, it's currently around $3.47 a gallon. A month ago it was at $3.19 a gallon.

Gas was $3.42 in our area. Did not look this morning, but I expect it to rise sharply with the breaking news this morning from Iran (again).

I drive a 95 Dodge Diesel 4x4 truck every day for a 82 mile round trip commute. I burn up over $100 per week in fuel. It is worse because the overdrive is out on the truck and I cannot afford to replace the transmission right now (even though I do my own rebuilding, the parts for this model will cost me over $500). It still gets 16 mpg without OD, which is almost as good as our gas Trailblazer. With OD, that big lug of a behemoth vehicle will pull down 23 or better MPG. Diesel is currently $3.79 in my area. The place I purchase it is critical. Some fuel is horrid and the truck really suffers. The best fuel I can find is worth over 3 mpg to me.

Looking to purchase a motorcycle as soon as my tax returns hit.

Not THE most efficient bike, but at 45 mpg on gas, it would make a difference, and I love to go fast and far on two wheels. This older classic is my favorite bike of all time. Can't wait to get my hands on one. With over 125 horsepower and a 150+ top speed, this critter will git with the program, even with 2-up.
