One without any study note, pretty much just cross refernces edition only?

Find myself more and more going towards using bare bones bible, in addition to Greek text/commentaries etc while studying the Word?

Isn't that an oxymoronic statement (question?).

I understand what you are saying.

Presently I am doing a study on the Gifts of the Spirit. I decided to keep my study as simple as possible. Setting aside the commentaries and using on the Bible with good cross references, a Strong's Concordance, and a Complete Word Study Dictionary helps (but does not end) the influence of other writers. I really wanted to avoid having what I learned kept from as much outside influence as possible.

That said, when I buy people Bibles (especially a newly married couple) I will buy one descent study Bible and one Bible that only has cross references.

Far too often we spend more time learning another person's ideas instead of God's. In fact I read an article about this yesterday. Too often preachers prepare a sermon on the commentary of choice, as opposed to the Bible. To be sure commentaries have their place, but we must be careful in how we use them.

I think that good commentaries are important, but only after you have studied the Scripture from a couple of translations and arrived either at some understanding or an impasse. I am not very good with Greek or Hebrew (I’ve taken Greek, and survived the experience – but that’s about it), so I do rely on lexicons and end up in a commentary – but first I try to stick to the biblical text alone.

when in bible school, one of the first things we were taught was to do our own study , especially as regards to study of the doctrinal words in greek/hebrew, using contex and cross references, and once have some own conclusions, than go grab a good commentary!

It's good to study, then find common conclusions in a commentary afterwards.

    I prefer a plain Bible.
