The primary responsibilities of the local church

    With all the movements that ebb and flow in the Christian world, I think it's a good idea to take a step back and re-evaluate what the primary purposes/responsibilities are for the local church.

    So - I humbly post what I see as the top 5 purposes of the local church are:

    1. To Glorify God. All the things listed below are for the exclusive purpose of fulfilling this first responsibility.

    2. Proclaim the Word of God

    3. Discipleship - this necessitates/assumes intentional evangelism

    4. Equipping believers to do "the work of the ministry", primarily rooted in #3 above and ongoing spiritual growth, and the use of their gifts.

    5. Active involvement in church planting/missions

    Looks good to me. I would think that #5 could be done in many ways. Some churches divide and others get larger. seems ot me thayt the focus should be mostly outward.

    I have heard them put this way, which I like simply because it is less numbers to remember:

    1. Minister to God: Worship
    2. Minister to its members: Discipleship/Training
    3. Minister to the World: Evangelism/Service

    I like that list. Those 3 points, in that order, cover it all, IMHO.
