Is the Arizona Primary Getting Short Shrift?

    There are two primaries today, Michigan and Arizona.

    Michigan has been in the news almost daily. The bulk of the news reporting is on Michigan. Polls in Arizona give Romney a double digit lead over Santorum. The reasons are (I suppose) that Michigan polls are tight, that Michigan is Romney's home state, the candidates are spending most of their time in Michigan, and the Michigan has more Presidential electoral votes in the general election.

    However, this is the Republican primaries. Notice:

    Michigan has 30 delegates to give; they are awarded proportionally to how the primary vote is counted.

    Arizona has 29 delegates to give, they are awarded winner take all.

    So Romney figures to get about 42 delegates today, and Santorum perhaps 12 delegates.

    Disappointed to see Romney win both states.:( Guess I'll hold out hope for 3/6. In the meantime may Gingrich will drop out and Santorum might pick up most of those votes. Could even be a battle to the end, I suppose.

    I agree. Romney is a 'go wherever the wind blows' sort of politician who has no fixed moral principles of his own, while Santorum is definitely a principled conservative. It is sad that the whole country as a whole has no taste for Christian conservatives, which means Christians must simply support the most conservative candidate in the running. In this case, that is Santorum.

    At this point I don't see what business Gingrich has staying in the race. He might win Georgia, his home state, on Super Tuesday, and he might finish 2nd in Tennessee. I believe his goal of burnishing his stature among the Republican Party is complete and he will have a slew of speaking engagements and consulting gigs for the rest of his career.

    I think you are correct that the majority of Gingrich voters would switch allegience to Santorum. Gingrich must know that so at what point is he helping Romney (by not having his voters go to Santorum) by staying in the race? I'd say that point is now.

    I'd say that if Gingrich had dropped out before Michigan, Santorum would have won.

    I have a better idea. How about Romney dropping out, and raise the bar several levels? Romney is no better than Obama, and maybe worse. I am certainly pulling for Santorum for Super Tuesday.
