Each year about 300 people die due to a vehicle backing up. (about 1/2 of those are children)

The govt predicts that over 100 lives would be saved if all vehicles had back up cameras - which could be viewed by the driver on the dashboard.

Should the govt require all vehicles to have said back up cameras?

The cost of such a camera would raise the cost of a vehicle somewhere in the neighborhood of $200.

Seeing as how we are LONG PAST even having the capacity to ask these sort of questions about our government, yes, they have the right and we had better just learn to shup up and take it.

We gave up the right to question our Masters after we decided that electing those who would place a chicken in our pot were worthy of electing often enough so as to completely overhaul America as we once knew it.

And a camera in every car!

Wait a minute... Is the camera to watch us or the guy behind us?

I've used rear-view cameras and they can be helpful. I intend on adding several to my tow-rig and to my off-road truck to give me more eyes.

But the idea of government mandating the cameras to independent busines like an auto maker is a totally new area that is disturbing. Not that government mandates are new, but rather that the directives are issued as if the government is actually running the company these days. Almost like business is being socialized or something... :tongue3:

This is a good idea, should have been done earlier.

How many accidents will there be because people were watching the camera instead of looking outside while they were backing up?

Guess another big bucks goverment sponsored study is needed to determine this.

The way factory wired back-up cameras are wired, they only work when in reverse gear. They do not show what is behind the vehicle all the time.

There are also two ways (commonly) that they display, either through the large panel for the new auto media center in the dashboard, or through a small viewscreen built into the rear view mirror (replaces view that the mirror would normally give).

With the smallish windows and tall seats in most modern cars the camera is actually a good idea. Not like the old days when we had full fields of view all around the vehicle. All the focus on fuel economy stipulates smaller roof lines both more sloped and less tall glass, which makes for plenty of blind spots. In some vehicles it is virtually impossible to get a good rear view as the trunk lid is so much higher than what needs to be seen!

I've had one in my current vehicle for about 3 years; my wife recently drove a car without one, and she missed not having the camera. The only caution I have is, it shows what's behind you; you still need to look out the side windows to look for what's coming.

Would you also say then that it would be a good idea for the government to mandate three wheels on all motorcycles?

I imagine that there are less falls from those trikes than from two wheel bikes.

    What do you say?

No the government should not mandate it. I wish I had one though...

It would be cool if they replaced the "R" on the shift lever indicator with "Obama's Economy", since it is synonomous with being in reverse.

    Mandate...hmmm.

Like they mandated seat belts and airbags.

Is there actually an unbiased study on how much safer drivers are with back-up cameras?

Um, that would first require another multi-billion dollar government study.

There were about 1.3 million cars sold last year. Roughly, it would cost about a million bucks a year to save 200 kids a year.

Motorcycle are 10 times more dangerous than cars/trucks. I wish I was still in good enough shape to ride. Old people heal to slowly.

We've got one on both our vehicles. They're nice and worth the option purchase. It isn't just for seeing kids but other cars and being safer backing into a space near a wall.

I don't really care if the gov't mandates it, it's a stupid issue but that is the kind of issue that gets play amongst the rabble that the news is written for these days. No big deal for us we already have them.

But where does it stop - what if the govt requires 55mph governors, no driving with more than 3 inches of snow, no eating or drinking soda while driving, no storage on seats- must all be in the trunk (even a flying briefcase could be deadly, animals must be in animal cages

As I just asked, where will all end?

any other stupid laws they could pass?

Well maybe it's important to remember that these requirements are only of the (largely government funded) auto makers...not auto drivers.

But the same thing was said about those crazy inventions like windshield wipers, seat belts, higher gas mileage, child safety locks, etc.

I'm not an apologist for the govt, I just don't care. (yes that makes me a terrible, terrible person...)

I'd be happy if some of the idiots on the road would look out of the windshield when going forward. Technology can't fix stupid.

Actually, there are probably more serious crashes and less parking lot falls.

As a rider and racer for years, I know that motorcycles are intended to lean into turns, and that it is that leaning in combination with centrifical forces that make them the cornering machines that they are. The inability to lean causes the front tire to wash out in corners as the contact patch is not sufficient to hold the greater straight line forces steming from double (or more) rear wheel traction.

Motorcycles are not inherently more dangerous than vehicles just because of design, but rather they EXPOSE the rider to more dangers because he or she is not wrapped in metal and air bags. Additionally, the skill level of many riders is not up to par, which is not the fault of the bike itself, but rather with the rider.
