On Tuesday morning, as I lay in bed holding Teeger close to my chest, I wondered what I could say to him, to ease his feelings and fear, as the two of us knew he was dying. I remembered that when he was a young little guy, he'd sneaked away from my wife, in the front room, and come into the bedroom and crawl up next to me while I watching the Lakers, Dodgers, or Rams. Over the years, the bedroom was truly our man cave, right up to the end!

During commercials, or when my teams were winning big, or losing badly, I'd whisper softly in his ear, my personal versions of those age-old fairy tales, but with Teeger as the central figure. The stories I'd tell him included things like, "Little Red Teegerhood" or "Teeger and Gretal" or even "Teeger, and the two Little Pigs!"

Over the years, I never really knew if he liked the stories, but because he remained near my chest with his little ear pointed in the direction of my voice, I figured he either enjoyed them, or tolerated them because of his undying love and loyalty to me. I always chose to think he thoroughly enjoyed the stories, and who wouldn't?

So the other night (actually early morning) as we waited for the vet to arrive at his office, so we could have him come to our home to help Teeger make his way from this life to the Mansion Jesus went to prepare for our family, in heaven, I pulled him close to my chest and softly whispered into his ear, what would be the very last time he'd hear those special stories!

As I shared with him, I also gently rocked him, as my wife and I found that rocking motion seemed to help him be less agitated with the ongoing seizures, he was experiencing each time his medications wore off.

What some of you may see as an oddity, came to my attention as I felt an ever so small, warm drop of moisture hit my bare, right biceps. As I continued to speak quietly to him, I felt a few more drops, and as I looked down at his precious little face, not missing a beat with the tales I was sharing with him, it was suddenly evident that coming from his eyes, were little puppy tears. In an effort to not wake or disturb him, I reached for the clump of tissues I'd been using to wipe away my tears, and gently dabbed his tears, too!

Teeger and I both knew that this would be the last few hours we'd have to spend together on this earth and in this life, and I knew that he knew, that the decision to help him leave through euthanasia, was the right one, but also the hardest one I'd ever make in this life. It was evident to both my wife and myself, that he was struggling with all he had left within him to hold on to what little bit of life and dignity and loyalty and love he left; so helping him leave us was the only humane thing I could do for my little friend.

His little puppy tears were also a sign that saying good-bye was just as difficult for him as it was for me and my wife. Being a part of your pet's life for so many years (in our case - eighteen and five months) is nothing to sneeze at. It was as love bound as any we'd have with another human, and while parting may have been inevitable, it was not without deep emotional groaning on the hearts of all of us that morning! :tear:

So, the next time you find yourself and your beloved pet is at heaven's door, remember that if you had a rich, full life with them, you can be sure that they are having as hard a time saying good-bye, as you and I! :type:

Hello to, all my friends on the board. While I'm not officially back, I had to share with you the sorrow my wife, and I just went through as we lost our dog (he was 18 years old and change) on Tuesday. On top of this, just 9 days earlier, we lost of second cat in a period of less than four months. The pain of losing one pet, who you spent 18 loving years with was bad enough, but to lose two more pets, tight on top of each other (both of them were 18 years old too) was a little more than it seemed I could bear, until I started to receive the blessings of others who prayed for my wife and I.

I am going to continue to take a respite from the board, as I have thoroughly enjoyed the peace of not having to be caught up in turmoil with others because of something, I say. So, while I am still just a cyber tap away from you, I am going to remain on this self-induced hiatus

Mrs Salty just had to say good-bye to Kreemee about 3 weeks ago. She had her kitten for 16 years - long before we were married.

Yes, it was a very hard day. My wife held Kreemee until her very last breath. We brought her home and buried her outside the window that she love to sit on and look at the birds. :tear:

My prayers all with both of yours' families. Stories like this make me want to hold Lexie that much closer.

I couldn't help but thinking when you said this...I hope Teeger is a Pappillon. Probably not, but, thanks for the story. Teeger is at Peace now.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I had my Sandy for 17 years (she was a year old when I got her as a stray) when it was time for her to be put down. It was so heartbreaking and it took me MONTHS to not expect her to be right there - she was such a part of our lives.

((HUGS)) and I pray for God's comfort for you. It's amazing how these animals get into our souls....

RD- I imagine most folks who have had multiple dogs (or cats or other pets) keep one in mind that was unique. One that there was a particular bond that they know they will never see again in another animal. Teeger sounds like he was such a buddy.

It's tough, no doubt. Hang in there.

I am sorry for you and your wife today.

Pets have been a part of our lives since we were married. We have a Maltese, a house cat, and eight parakeets. Each has its own personality. They are truly a blessing from the Lord.

Sorry RD. (((hugs))) I hate losing my pets to heaven. And I'm guessing the angel whose job it is to look after them for me hates it too. They are all special, from my first little Blackie (penkinese/chihuaha mix) and Harrycat that I lost as a child, to my Ava (husky) that I lost this past spring. I imagine that right now that poor angel is trying to figure out how to keep Ava inside the fence so she doesn't chase the neighborhood cats! :D The other's are likely not so much trouble, except, there have been a LOT of them!

    My wife now has cats.

For over 30 years I refused to have a pet because i lost several when i was growing up. Their lifespan is so short compared to ours.

I love pets, I just hate losing them

My heart goes out to you

I am so sorry to hear of the death of your beloved Teeger. I completely understand how you feel. Pets are more than just furry companions, but are truly members of the family. Losing one of them is like losing a child and a friend. It's heartbreaking.

On April 15, 2011 we had to have our cat Chibi put down. Chibi had been with me for 22 years. He was my baby and I adored him. It's been almost a year and the pain still is in there. I can't think too much about him or I cry (as I am now). I still miss him terribly, but I know he's not suffering anymore and is waiting for me. I'll get to see him again along with all of my other pets that I've lost in my life. (Robin, Laney, Davey, Tam, Conor, Erin, Star, and Chibi....I miss all of them and love them dearly.) You'll be seeing your sweet Teeger again one day too. :)

    Edited to add photo:
This is my Chibi kitty. Oh I miss him!

Well, R-Dude, you made this guy cry, and I dont care who knows it.

I am a life long animal lover..particularly dogs. I have a Jack Russle terrior that I love so much I cant adequetly articulate it.

When her time comes I will be a complete mess for a while.

Like you, I believe our beloved pets will be with us in heaven.

Very sorry to hear of your loss.

    He Was...

...a yorkie (Silky, actually), and since I don't quite know how to put his photo on the board, I'll give you another site (http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474981221567) where I posted his photo and one of our two cats (Eli and Mouse) that we lost too. Thanks for asking, about the breed, and God bless you dearly!.

    Well....AIC,

...I'm not sorry for making you cry. They say that tears are good for us, and if they are correct, I am feeling very good right now. Still, my wife and I are having a hard time, as is our last little friend (Skittles), as we struggle to fill the void this determined bundle of love has left us! The memories and photos will keep us close until we all get together again in that mansion, just over the hilltop. In fact, we have more than 25 little friends waiting there. :flower:

Our last dog would cry every time we fed it cantalope. It was a pure bred meloncollie.

Researchers have long known that the animal-human bond is strong: A 1988 study in the Journal of Mental Health Counseling asked a group of dog owners to place symbols for their family members and pets in a circle representing each dog owner’s life. (The distance between the subject and the other symbols corresponds to the relative, real-life closeness of those relationships.) The subjects tended to put the dog closer than the average family member, and about as close as the closest family member; in 38 percent of the cases, the dog was closest of all.

We recently lost 'Samson' our beloved companion. We do 'doggie foster care' and he was one that we fostered and we ended up his 'forever home'. He was only eight years old but had a serious back condition that was getting worse and worse. We had to make that very difficult decision to take him for that last journey to the Vet. Miss him terribly!

    So Very...

...sorry for you and ALL the others who have expressed the pain of losing their pets. They become like family, and it is never losing family members who you love and lived with every day of their life.

Sometimes, sad as it is to say, they are harder to lose than family.

Åh, att fler människor var som sina hundar ... (Oh, that more people were like their dogs...)

You Hit It Out Of the Park...

...I can better understand the words of a Classic hit that says, "You got a piece of my heart!" He took with him a piece of my heart, like only few have ever done in this life. I can only imagine my wife, and our last fur ball may do the same, should I tarry, and they leave. I was talking to my doctor yesterday about this very thing, and he admitted to me that he would miss his dog more than his wife. So many do have a strong, lifelong attachment to their furry family member.

In our case, Teeger was our child.
