What is their origin? When, specifically compared to Jesus' ministry, did they evolve?

    Supper-quick version:

After the Maccabean revolts (Jewish uprisings against Rome during the 400 yrs between the testaments), Some Jewish Priests took on a "rome-friendly, Liberal" view of Judaism. This group was called the sadducees. They denied that there was a resurection...but they had control of the Chief Priest line up till Jesus' Day.

Over and agianst this group, another group of religous leaders arose called the pharisees, they were very strict and conservative, seeking to obey the Scriptures to the letter. They urged a more pure judaism, and were seen by most of the committed Jews as the real Spiritual leadership. They were well-thought of.

They were established in this role before Jesus came along. So Jesus speaking bad about them would not have been the popular thing to do in his time.

Scarlett O., I'm sorry..., but you opened the door and I'm about to make a lot of people mad with me. Please forgive me here but..., many of the descendants of these Pharisees can be found right here on this forum.

A tip of the hat to 12strings for the Supper-quick version. Hits the nail on the head for a..., a..., Super-quick version? Is that supposed to be "Supper" or "Super"?

Anyway, what's the difference between the liberals and conservatives back then compared to today? Not much. The drum beat of "religion" marches on!

It does seem to me that anyone who knows Jesus and is indwelt with the Holy Spirit is, for the most part, going to respond accordingly to the Will of our Lord. That desire is just in us and we can't get away from it..., unless you're of the Free Will Baptist persuasion that is. I certainly don't want to get away from it.

What then do we need with an Operators Manual? There isn't a thing wrong with that Operators Manual and we should all have at least one copy and read it daily. But when we start adding to it and helping the author of this Operators Manual by adding additional chapters, requirements, duties, etc., then we slip into the "religious" mode. Sad.

Those Pharisees were driven to protect their "position" in the community and they certainly saw Jesus as an enemy. Kinda like today in many circles.

Yes indeed..., the Scribes and Pharisees. A den of vipers!

Did any of you catch the latest news regarding "Trinity Broadcasting"? Can you believe it..., some of those TV personalities have been skimming millions off the top. Wow. Who'd ah thunk it? All those folks donating money for the Work Of The Lord only to realize they are paying for private jets, fleets of Limo's, vacations on the French Riviera not to mention more jewelry for Benny Henn.

...I'm sorry, Scarlett O. I just couldn't help myself. I'm a firm believer that it should not be a burden to be a Christian. Modern day Scribes and Pharisees are such a burden! :praying:

Thank you. This is what I was looking for. I knew that they - along with the Sadducees popped up between the Old and New Testament, but I didn't know precisely when nor why.

Some would contend that the sadducees were the conservatives/fundamentalists of the day because they believed the Torah only. The other parts of the OT were not the Torah.

Some might even say it corrected the original text.
