    Rubio: Not experienced enough.
Paul Ryan: No foreign policy experience (a Romney weakness.)
    Christie: too liberal.

The clear choice for me is Santorum. Not because I'm a Santorum supporter but because he brings a lot to the table.

    1. Foreign policy experience
    2. Ability to deliver a large swing state in Pennsylvania
    3. Conservative pedigree
    4. Support of Christian conservatives, a demographic that Romney has trouble attracting.

Basically, every demographic that Romney doesn't appeal to, Santorum has in the bag. Pro-life, pro traditional marriage, pro 2nd amendment. Between Romney and Santorum they would have almost the entire spectrum of Republicans covered and plenty of independent voters.

The Vice-President does not add or take a lot away from a ticket. In extreme circumstances and in close elections, maybe a point or two. I have read Mondale made a big difference in the 1976 election, who knows.

Assuming one could stomach Romney, I agree with In the Light. Santorum makes the most sense. He won almost the entire south, middle states, and a variety of states in the midwest and west. I do think whoever the person is, it must be someone like I would have voted for President.

Personally, I don't think Santorum is a good match, though I agree it would be good for Romney to have someone more conservative on the ticket with him. Marco is great, but too green. It will be interesting to see who he picks.

No way. Santorum turns too many people off. He is socially conservative, but economically, he is at best a moderate.

We need a limited government conservative on the ticket, that can greatly broaden Romney's voter base, and appeal to younger high energy voters.

    Rand Paul.

I believe he would be better served staying Senator of our state. If you want to take one of our two senators, take Mitch McConnell, please. Mitch McConnell, part of the Republican establishment like Romney, opposed Rand Paul every moment until he thrashed his opponent in the primary. I have no use for Mitch.

    Oh, but Rand Paul doesn't?

Rand Paul has no foreign policy experience and he's from a state that is safely in the Republican column already. He doesn't bring experience or a swing state to the equation. I'd rather keep him in the Senate.

Look at the exit polls from the Republican primaries. Ron Paul does well with youth but so does Santorum. Can't say one way or the other how Rand Paul would do with youth voters.

Another thing--high energy youth voters? What has that done for Ron Paul? Yes, he draws large crowds of loud students, but what do these kids do when they leave the rallies? Do they get the word out? Do they do fundraising? Make phone calls? Go door knocking? My impression of Ron Paul's youth support is that it is broad but shallow.

Say what you want, but I personally avoided voting for Bush Jr both times because Dick Cheney was on his ticket.

Also, I know a lot of people who avoided McCain because of Palin.

He can't get Santorum after what has been said about Romney. Besides, Santorum would be a trainwreck.

Romney needs a strong female running mate, a Condy Rice or Kay Bailey Hutchinson type. That would do a lot for him...though certainly not enough. This guy is getting smoked in November. Shame on the Republicans for blowing their chance.

Amen to that. There are several terms that will describe the Romney outcome, smoked, thrashed, skewered clobbered, crushed, sent home with his tail between his legs, etc......

I can understand that, but we are talking about the overall populace. Personally, I voted for the second Bush twice, but had the same thought you did. I went ahead and voted for him because I considered Gore and Kerry as President more of a threat than Dick Cheney as Vice President. I did not like his demeanor, that perpetual snarl on face, nor did I like his arrogance towards the American people in general. The man never served one day in the armed forces, but he sure had a lot of opinions about who should be willing to sacrifice themselves. No, I would have never voted for Cheney at the top of the ticket, but for a different reason than Romney.

I read that Mondale made a big difference for Carter in 1976. I do not know if that is true or not. It could have, as Mondale and Ford were both from the northern midwest.

I almost did not vote for Richard Nixon because of Spiro Agnew, which I detested. It turns out they were both crooks, but I could not bring myself to vote for a Humphrey or a McGovern.

I think Reagan's biggest mistake was picking Bush as Vice-President. That would have spared us twelve years of pseudo-conservative rule.

A Vice-President I did like that I thought was maligned in the press for no good reason was Dan Quayle. In fact, in 1988, that is why I did vote for the first Bush, because I did not like him. But, in that election, the alternative was another Massachusetts governor, Michael Dukakis.

The only time I ever voted for a Demcrat in ten or eleven elections was Jimmy Carter in 1976. I was really fed up with Nixon, and Ford's pardon of him. That turned out to be a big mistake and voted for Reagan against him in 1980.

This year will be my first third party vote.

I have mixed feelings on a 3rd party vote. I honestly feel like that's throwing away a vote (no disrespect to you). If I got to that point, I'd do like I did in one other election, and simply not vote for POTUS. I hated myself for doing that and I swore I'd never do it again, but sometimes...I don't know.

I won't vote for Obama. That much is 100% clear. I also don't want to take votes away from whoever is running against him that has a chance...but I don't know that Romney/*insert name here* are that much better. The "lesser of two evils" I'm still sitting on. The one time I did not vote was because I felt that way. I felt both candidates were crap and I wasn't going to vote that way. Sometimes I'm thankful that I've only been able to vote a few times. I also feel like sometimes, honestly, state and local elections are far more important to directly impacting my life. I also hate the electoral college, but that's a conversation for another time.

It's just a shame we can't get a decent man as a candidate, in either party.

Sidenote: I also liked Dan Quayle. There are others that I like now that I wish would run. It's a shame they won't.

Candidates say things about their opponents in the primaries every election cycle and they almost always make up and support the candidate. George Bush Sr. called Reagan's economic plan "voodoo economics" and lambasted Reagan all during the primary season yet he was picked as the VP running mate.

He's the best hope for Romney to attract the evangelical crowd that is leery of voting for a Mormon.

Oh, please no. Tried that. Been there, done it.

I think he will lose but it will be closer than the McCain results.

Not at all. Rand Paul is well respected by both the Paleo-Conservative Ron Paul types, AND the die hard Tea Partiers, AND the more moderate Republicans. He is well respected on all sides.

Santorum lost Pennsylvania, by almost 20 points. Pennsylvania has not voted for a Republican in the presidential race since Bush Senior, and even then it was by pulling democrats. Santorum and Romney have zero chance of doing that; PA is NOT a swing state.

As far as Rand's experience, who cares? Santorum is a moron, and it shows. At least Rand is intelligent, charismatic, and well spoken... not tooling around in sweater vests.

That is simply not true. While Santorum does well with Young voters compared to Romney, Ron Paul has still beaten him in that category, even in cases where Santorum has won the state...

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. Every Ron Paul voter I know participates in the Convention process, goes door to door, does fundraising, etc. Paul has more total people that give him donations than any other; he just doesn't have the Goldman Sachs types who can drop 10 million dollars a piece.

Your impression of Ron Paul supporters is pretty much the opposite of every other thinking individuals. Ron Paul's campaign offices are always packed in various states, whereas the other candidates do not even have them.

This is why the GOP in Nevada has been almost completely taken over by RP supporters. Likewise in several other states. Its why in 8 different states that Paul lost, in the popular vote, he is now SWEEPING in Delegates.

Please explain to me how having a Catholic running-mate will make evangelicals feel better about voting for a Mormon?! :tonofbricks:

Might be better to get an EVANGELICAL running mate....

But would a true Christian Evangelical run with a Morman. Would he discard his Christian values to do so? If he or she did would they really be worth the vote?
