What a silly, disrespectful view of contemporary worship. Just because a man in a suit is not standing in front of a pipe organ, piano, and choir, keeping time with his arms singing the 1st, 3rd, and last verses of Amazing Grace and prolonging a decision time until at least SOMEONE walks the aisle after the sermon has been given doesn't mean the style of worship is not just as pleasing to God's heart. Our goal in worship is to praise our maker. Do you who bash contemporary worship also bash, say, the African tribes who worship our Jesus with only the beat of drums and MAYBE a stringed instrument or flute? Please, the contemporary vs. traditional debate is tired and played out. In a world that is going to hell, the ONLY thing we need to be concerned with is preaching the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Worship style is not of eternal import; it can't send anyone to hell. Please, focus on the import and not the preference.

Obviously both Jason and Milby have shown the extremes.

Here is my whole point - whether it is trad or CCM - do the words have meaning? Do you know what you are singing. I will often mention that during a church.

One big complaint I have with the "7-11" songs is the constant repeating of the "verses" - but are we getting anything out it.

And yes the same goes for memorizing Bible Verses. I remember in Awana Clubs - some kids will remember over a dozen verses a week just to earn the award. After they recite the verse - they are ready to say the next one - but often I will stop them and ask them what the last verse means.

    Thoughts....

I agree it's silly, it's a parady. It would only be disrespectful if it werent true.

I have seen this many times, you bring in the young cool motivational speaker/preacher, the church starts to grow fast (in numbers only), the next step is to go into multi millions of dollars of debt for the new building to have the concerts/services in, the kids flock to the alter to say the magic prayer accepting Jesus and then go right back into the world thinking they are saved.

The problem is many, not all, but many will face judgement one day and Matthew 7:21-23 will be their reality.

    Thats what is sad.

So what, Specifically would address these problems, which are admittedly evident in some churches?

To me, it would be to be sure that the person who is in charge of the worship is a mature believer who understands what true worship is - and who would be willing to lead in a way that is consistent with that worship.

The man we have currently in that role is amazing. He disciples those in his worship team, and really works at finding songs that are great worship songs and not songs just to perform. He will address the congregation with a few words to encourage true worship and while they do their job with excellence musically (I LOVE listening to them), they work to be sure that the glory is not theirs but the Lord's. I think also teaching from the pulpit on what true worship is really helps.

    Critique and questioning are easy.

So, what is your solution to the perceived problem?

Our Music most Sunday Mornings consists of a Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, & Acoustic Drum set. We will usually sing 6 songs (TOTAL), and 2-3 of those would be considered "old hymns."

A few weeks ago someone visited our church and commented on how "Traditional" our service was.

    Go figure.

I have seen this same video about 3 or 4 times and got a good laugh out of each time I saw it. Its very funny.

Having said that, I can also say that I VERY MUCH enjoy that form of worsip music, and I think it is very effective for worship. We actually have that style of music at my church. I play the electric guitar.

I have been trying to get them to let me put some banjo into the mix, with no success so far.

The main problem with any kind of worship is that it isn't always worship. We can't truly worship if we don't really understand what worship is. Worship is not the singing portion of the church service. Worship is what comes from the heart and is all about God, directed to God, completely and totally about God. It's not the beat of the music, it's not the words of the music. It's what your heart is saying TO God....not about Him. We are to worship HIM.

Worship is not the song service. We call them worship teams, worship leaders, worship bands....they're not. Worship is not a team sport, it's an individual thing. Until we can truly understand what worship is and is not we can sing all the songs we want, of any timber or temp, and it won't be worship.

You can't walk in the door of the sanctuary, out of breath after running from SS to the sanctuary, making sure all the kids are in their respective groups, having run through the morning anthem with the choir, making sure the instruments in the worship band are all in tune, the microphones in proper place and turned on, sit down at the piano and expect to worship. Hearts and minds must be prepared to worship. I don't think enough people do that.

I know at our church we have to remind folks of this often. They have a habit of coming in from SS and using that fifteen minutes as a social hour. We have to call them down or sing over them to get them to sit down so we can start the morning service. There's nothing worshipful in that at all. It takes almost the entire singing portion to even get people settled down enough to hear the message. Right now we're simply working on getting people to come in quietly and use that time to pray, read a scripture and prepare their hearts for worship.

Thats fine as long as you understand that there are many ways to worship.

Worship in listening to preaching/teaching. Contemplative worship. Worship through prayer. Worship through the enjoyment of Gods creation. Worship through calm forms of music. Worship through louder forms of music, etc etc etc.

All I am about to say is purely my own opinion, and yours may vary widely from it and that is fine--I believe in the priesthood of the believer.

BUT--I do NOT go to church to worship!

    Shocked? Why?

Worship is something so gloriously intimate it happens between one's soul and God. No other human person can "lead" another in worship.

Now that said, I do support and appreciate and attend where the preaching and singing proclaim the marvelous gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified, resurrected, and coming again. I do attend where the necessity of conversion is preached to the lost, with opportunity for them to respond.

I do support strong teaching ministry also.

But...the instant...I sense some "worship leader" is out to get a specific emotional response from the crowd--I'm gone.

I won't tolerate it from Baptists anymore than I tolerate it from all those weeping name it and claim it by just sending me your money folks.

My reason is simple: I want to see the lost come to Christ by faith. I fear some come and get a goosebump moment and think that means they are saved.

    And it doesn't.

Daimond Lady, There are lots of good things in what you say, but I'd like to address a few things (keep in mind, I"m only addressing the parts I disagree with, so the parts I deleted, I pretty much agree with):

-Well, it can be...It's just also other things also.

-The phrase "worship leader" is not inappropriat in itself, as long as we recognize that the primary leader of worship in a church is its Senior Pastor, he will be the one pointing people toward God and his word more than anyone else. That said, a song-lead can do that as well, and so "lead worship." A group of people could do that as well, and so be called a "worship team."

-Col. 3:16 says to "sing songs...to 'one another', even as we are giving thanks to God. While we may not call it a sport, CORPORATE WORSHIP (differentiated from private worship) is very much a social, church-body-edifying time. I think it is a mistake to tell people to "just imagine it's just God and you with no one else around" ...If that was best, why come to church in the first place?

-The Bolded section I agree with. However, I don't think we can accurately say that it's impossible for the following people to truly worship:
    1. People who's Sunday-school discussion was really good, and so it ran long and made them nearly late for the worship service.
    2. Mothers with young children who are either dropped off at the nursury crying, or whose children may even be in the service with them, distracting her.
    3. Choir members who practice a song meant to be a blessing to the people and to God.
    4. A Music leader who needs to check the sound board before the service.

All of these people CAN worship, and while we should make an effort to set aside time to focus soley on God...Life continues to happen even on sunday mornings...and the more kids you have, the more "life" happens. It does't mean we can't worship God.

Also, a note from the Grammar police:

"Worship" is what's known as a "transitive verb". That means it needs an object. Other transitive verbs you are familiar with are THROW and HOLD.

So just as it makes zero sense to say: "I like it when I get to THROW." or "I'm glad I got to HOLD today." ...It also makes no sense to say: "I like to worship." or, "I'm going to church to worship." Because it begs the question: WORSHIP WHAT?

We are not just called to worship. We are called to WORSHIP GOD!

So, are saying that you believe that if someone puts thier faith in Christ, while worship music is being played...God will not accept them?

    WAYS, yes...
    FOCUS, no.

If the focus of your "worship" is on the louder form of music then it's not worship. If you are enjoying the music so much that you've lost who it is directed to then it's not worship. If your focus is on the preaching and teaching, it's not worship. Worship is directed only to God. It's personal, not corporate. When it becomes all about your enjoyment, your edification then it's stopped being worship.
