    Is an abortion ever acceptable

NOTE: You may choose as many answers as you deem necessary?

Abortion IF necessary, but necessarily abortion. That has always been my guiding principle on abortion.

    Cheers,

I would vouch to say that abortion is never acceptable. Now some would say that it is necessary if the mother is as a serous health risk, but I fully disagree because there have been mothers who have died during an abortion, plus the cases where the mother would die if she gave birth are extremely low. The best option is to find a safer alternative for those who really need to get the baby out without killing the child or the mother in the process.

There are times that continuing a pregnancy absolutely will kill both mother and child. The time that I am specifically thinking of is an ectopic pregnancy. A child implanting in the fallopian tube is doomed. There is zero chance the child will survive. The mother will most likely die if allowed to continue the pregnancy until her tube ruptures unless she is in close proximity to good surgical care.

Beyond that, I believe that it would be a VERY rare case of the mother's life at risk. I'm speaking imminent risk - not long-term risk.

Otherwise, I believe abortion to be wrong.

For some reason my motto is missing a word...."not"

"Abortion if necessary, but not necessarily abortion."

I further believe that abortion in to-day's society has become just another day and random sexual promiscuity has made this possible.

If we clearly taught moral values, we wouldn't have a problem with abortion, but it is NOT birth control, in my opinion.

    Cheers,

    Jim

If you have a situation where you have two living people who are hurting/dying, and you have to make a decision to save one (because you can't save both)...are you in essence "aborting" the other living person?

I think abortion is wrong. But I don't know (if in your situation below) that should even be considered to be abortion? Maybe it should, I don't know. I have a hard time wrapping myself around a situation where the baby CAN survive, but you have to choose one or the other because the mother absolutely won't if the baby is delivered.

I'm glad I don't make that decision. But that might be the only time I'd think it was even remotely acceptable...and even then I don't know.

Officially, I believe it would not be termed an abortion because there is a medical procedure being done but for all intents and purposes, it is killing the unborn that is alive. Unfortuantely, there is no way to transplant an already implanted embryo to another location.

Interestingly enough, do you know that I had 2 abortions? Yes. They are called "spontaneous abortion" - which is another term for miscarriage. That bothered me for so long, that I had in my medical records that I had "spontaneous abortions" but then I realized it's just a medical term. Any time a pregnancy ends, it's an abortion whether it was God or man who did it. :(

Generally speaking, don't ectopic pregnancies "spontaneously abort" a great deal of the time?

I was going to say that I couldn't go along with abortion, even to save the mother's life. Then I thought better of it. If it was daughter whose life was in danger, I don't know that I could stand by my moral objection to abortion under any circumstances.

I'm just a dumb human, after all.

Actually, they don't. They usually are found out when a woman goes in with lower quadrant pain, possible bleeding and a positive pregnancy test. The fertilized egg finds a good home in the fallopian tube and doesn't normally miscarry, unfortunately. So it's not until the child has grown big enough to begin to expand the walls of the tube and causes the mother pain that it is found out.

I know. It's a tough decision. I think there are cases where "risking the mother's life" is a cop-out but other times where there is no choice. However, I believe that the best possibility is to get the child to an age of viability (24-25 weeks and the child has a chance, every week after that and they have a much greater chance). Don't just kill the child. Instead deliver it and work as hard as you can to keep BOTH alive.

There is just this thought, no matter how a child is conceived, all life is of God and just who are we to make that choice? I dare say none of us, men or women are in a position to decide who lives or who dies. If a life is in the balance that life should live.

That leaves the question of when life actually begins. Some believe it begins around the 7th month and actual birth.

In each of those cited cases, the child implanted not in the fallopian tube but elsewhere. To take a "wait" stance, you will absolutely be risking the life of the mother AND causing her extreme pain (a tubal pregnancy is not pain-free but instead excrutiating as the tube is stretched to the point of finally bursting). The baby implanted in the tube WILL die. There is no "maybe" with this scenerio and anyone who says there is would be medically ignorant.

I find it interesting that the author cites information that is from the '70s. That is fully 40 years ago. Certainly there is more recent info than that!!

I get what you are saying, and I understand that there is a difference. For now I will have to remain with my abortion is not an option, but it does require some more research on my part.

I fought hard against the ending of a pregnancy that implants in the fallopian tube but after speaking to doctors (a number of them pro-life believers) and doing research on my own, I can see that the child in the tube has a 0% chance of surviving and it cannot be implanted anywhere else. If it implants outside the uterus/tube, it has a slightly higher chance of surviving but still very small. The fact that there are single cases of a child surviving and not many is very telling.

It's hard but this is one case where I believe that an "abortion" is right. The child has no chance. So now it's time to give the mom one.
