I agree with Mandym here.....how do you really pit them against each other...I have not at any time seen Jesus...did he not say to Thomas something about those who have not seen him being more blessed? I believe in him because of the witness of the Scriptures.

I suppose we will have to cross that bridge when we come to it.....fortunately, however, that will be a LONG...LONG....LONG time coming...as in not yet, and not ever.

No, our faith is in him as he has revealed his truth to us in his Bible..... I never met him personally....If you mean, by this, that some kind of witness of the Holy Spirit must be appealed to.....the subjectivity of that is too imprecise to place signifigant or at least dogmatic faith in....It would truly become a "true for you, but not for me" scenario.

 

Yes, suppose Jesus appeared to you and showed you his pierced hands and his pierced side. He told you that you would be saved and be with him some day.

Would you believe that? I wouldn't. I might be hallucinating, or perhaps it was something I ate, or perhaps it was a dream? I could not be certain of this.

But I thank God for his Holy Scriptures that says "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Rom 10:13).

I like that verse. If I thought I saw Jesus, I would be happy today, but tomorrow I may begin to doubt. Maybe I was dreaming? Or maybe it was a false angel trying to deceive me?

But I love Romans 10:13, if I begin to doubt tomorrow I can look it up and it will still be there. If I doubt next week I can look it up and it will still be there. If I doubt 20 years from now I can look it up and it will still be there. It will be there forever.

I'll take the Word of God over some sort of experience every time.

 

God also promised to preserve his word as well...we do not have the originals (thank God) but we do have a sum total of textual witnesses to what the originals said. In short...we do know...what the originals said...and there simply are no (despite how minor they may seem to be) mistakes in them.....What other witness to Christ do you have but the Scriptures??? What else is there to believe??

That is exactly what you have done. The problem is you spend to much time trying to think of new threads to start without any real genuine ideas.

 

Scripture was produced and preserved by God to point us into an abiding love relationship with Christ. It is sufficiently powerful to do just that.

 

To restate: If a soldier writes a love letter to his beloved wife telling her he is coming home to get her and spend the rest of their lives together, Does she cherish the letter? YES. Does she cherish the letter more than the one who sent it? NO. May she re-read the letter from time to time to be reminded of her husband's love for her, and his promise to return? YES. But she doesn't love the message more than the messenger. If she does, she has misunderstood the message.
