My son goes to a private Christian school. It has maybe 60 students from K to 12th grade.

Today, when my wife picked him up, she was told that a 16 year old student put a shotgun to his head this morning and pulled the trigger.

I have been crying all day. I didnt know this young man, but I do know his story. I have been at the verge of death several times.

My pastor had been mentoring this person, and states that he believes that his mental state was much like mine. People think that being "bi-polar" means that people change every hour or so. That is so not true. Bi-polar is a long term change of moods. I can go for weeks feeling like I can conquer the world, and then I crash, and I feel worthless for several weeks.

Anyway, my pastor had been counseling this kid, and had no idea he had reached this point. But he feels this kid had bi-polar disorder just like me.

Please pray for him and his family. His name is Chris.

Only the people with kids in the school know about it right now. I will post the news story when it hits the papers.

BTW, I have shared my battle with mental illness on here many times. And I have shared my family history with mental illness.

This event is hard on me because the young man (16 years old) took his life this morning with a shotgun to his head.....just like my grandfather did.

Now....FAL, and Fred and his wife......tell me again how mental illness is not real...

Better yet...tell it to this kid's family!!!!

So far, this is all that has been published.

    May 21, 2012

    Dear Parents:

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you to inform you that Christopher Staples has passed away suddenly earlier today. We have informed the students in the junior high (Mrs. Ancona’s class) and the high school (Mrs. Brewin’s class) however we have not informed the elementary or kindergarten. We leave it up to you as parents to talk with your children about his passing.

Please be in prayer for the Staples family and our school.

We are continuing to have school this week however make the most prudent decision for your children on whether you send them to school or not. We will have counselors available all this week to pray with your children and or listen to their concerns.

If you have further questions, please feel free to call the office and talk to anyone of us.

    In Christ,

    Pastor Jon

John - First off, don't blame the ignorance of those members here on this child's death. Whether people believed him or not wouldn't make a difference. For those who are ready to take their lives, they are ready. :(

I definitely understand where you are coming from knowing where you were just a few short weeks ago. I wish this boy had help - had some hope - but who knows if that would have helped him. My daughters' friend killed herself last year by train - no one knew a thing. She didn't even leave a note.

To get to that point in a life where you feel there is no hope is just so sad. I know you struggle still but I do pray that the Spirit in you gives you enough to keep you going and relying on Him during those hard times. I don't struggle with depression or any other mental illness - not even PMS - but I know those who do and it's very real.

Please let those others out of your head. Don't give them the power over you that it seems that they have. Release them John. Put them on "ignore" in your head and let them go. You have so much more to put into your mind - your wife, your son, your Savior, your ministry. Keep focused on that. I know it will help. There are all kinds in this world and when we focus on the bad, it will definitely bring us down. Don't let it. It's not worth it.

Perhaps it would be wise to remove or at least edit the last post.

I understand the fervent heart, and how you must consider evil has been posted.

But rather than lash out at someone who you might consider righteously rigid in condemnation, regard the Grace of God shed in your heart.

Ann, this had hit so close to home. I dont know if i could ever even think about suicide again.

This is the saddest and most heartbroken that I have been in a long time, and now I see that i wouldnt want to put my wife, my kids and my friends through it.

If I could have had even 5 minutes with this kid maybe I could have helped.

FAL and StupidFred would have made this happen sooner.

No - This boy killed himself when he wanted to. Do you think ANY of this happened outside of God's control? Remember Who is still on the throne and Who could have stopped it if that was His desire. But for whatever reason, God allowed it and I don't believe anything could have been done to stop it. This boy had this in his head to do it. He was going to do it.

I know you think you could have helped but we just don't know. I'm so glad to know that you see how hurtful suicide is to those around them. I can't imagine your son's life without you and that was what I was trying to get through to you that night. :) John, let those members here who are haunting you go. Get them out of your head. It's not worth it.

    I agree Ann.
FAL, etc., had no input here. They are irrelevant to the situation.

I am sorry to disagree with you here, but this is just the situation that FAL and Fred tout as "not real"

Let them explain their beliefs to this kids family.

It's not FAL and Fred's fault that this happened, but it's people like them that promote the ignorance that allows these things to happen.

This incident took place in Maine.
FAL lives in Texas. What is the distance between Maine and Texas?
They don't have anything to do with this suicide, and as much as we disagree with their beliefs they have the right to have them, as we still have freedom of speech in this nation. It is also the essence of our beloved Baptist Distinctive "soul liberty," which Baptists have laid down their lives for.

As I say to others: I may not agree with the doctrines of the J.W.'s, but I will fight for their right to believe in them. That is the essence of soul liberty.
The same applies here. It is not their fault that this happened.

But you have to admit that the timing of their outbursts on mental illness just so happened to be right before this event.

No, it is not their fault this happened.....but their dogmatic ideas about mental illness will certainly affect someone at some point.

And as far as I know, the beliefs of the JW's have not caused any harm to anyone in the physical sense.

However, FAL and Fred will cause much harm to anyone suffering from a mental illness if they take their advice.

DHK, I know you will disagree with me, but FAL and Fred will hurt somebody someday. This event just solidifies the truth of that.

Well if he has already pulled the trigger it is too late to pray for him, but I will pray for his family to be able to give this to the Lord and see the truth..

Yes he already pulled the trigger.

Thank you for that heartfelt comment.

What truth? Are you going to say that he had unconfessed sin and didnt forsake it?

    Shame on you

It appears that FAL is right. You have some serious sin issues.

You constantly call me names and call FAL self-righteous garbage.

I have reported every one of your posts. They are inflammatory.

And your posts are deadly to people like Chris who killed himself this morning.

Do you honestly think that your posts calling people with illnesses sinners are not inflammatory?

When it is obvious sin, I am not afraid to say so.

The young man took his own life because of his own sin, not what someone says.

What sin are you talking about?

Me, calling you out and condemning you for calling sick people sinners? And blaming their illness on their denial?

Do you really think this 16 year old was in denial? Do you really think he was sinful and that's why he killed himself?

You are a heartless peice of trash

And yes, saying that was a sin....but it was also the truth.

    John
