Today there is a large number of Christians that feel it is acceptable to drink alcohol for recreational purposes or perhaps a night cap as long as they do not get drunk and of course they have their own personal definition of what being drunk is. There is also a number of Christians who believe smoking pot for recreational purposes or again a night cap is alright as long as they do not get high who also have their definition of what getting high is. Since alcohol is legal should marijuana be legal and if it is alright to drink is it alright to smoke dope? Why? Remember alcohol is a drug also.

FAL, I believe you are only addressing the symptom:

The bottom line question IMO is not the substance per se but the fact that there are substances which lead to an altered state of consciousness.

Caffeine is one of those drugs as well and has been shown to be highly addictive.

    Food can be addictive.

So, if we have an addiction and can admit to it we need to look into the reason as to why we have an addictive type personality because what we consume is not the basic problem but the reason for the need of consumption.

    Mark 7
14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
    18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Basically if we need to have an altered state of consciouness it means that we are not happy with our present situation and we need our tobacco, alcohol, coffee, food (or whatever) to relieve our distress.

Also, I am not convinced that this type of consumption in every case rises to the level of sin.
If it were then eating a full meal (with or without wine) or taking an aspirin or acetaminophen for a headache would be sin.

We are under the law of liberty which is bounded by the parameters of faith and the conscience (ourselves and others).

2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

The extremes are legalism and licentiousness which IMO, are two sides of the same coin.

Do you know what is astounding? The same person who started a whole series of theads about depression, and the treatment of depression is nothing but hiding behind sin, poses a question that a dispicable idea to even ponder.

Doesn't alcohol pose enough problems? So the reasoning is, since marijuana is no worse, let's double our problems.

Since the Bible tells us to obey the laws of our land, the question is a moot point. The thread needs to be shut down.

He gave you a well reasoned answer. But if you are "baiting" then that is against the rules.

It is an honest question and the response had nothing to do with the questions. This is not about food, tobacco, coffee or aspirin or anything else that is already legal. It is clearly narrowly focused and spelled out what it is about and bringing up other things hijacks the thread.

According to the OP, the question is "should marijuana be legal?"

    My answer is NO.

Why not? Just because alcohol is a legal drug, doesn't justify legalizing another drug.

So what are you saying as this is not about food, tobacco, or aspirin? Is it or is it not alright for Marijuana to be legal from a bible perspective as well as Christians smoking it for pleasure? Should we as Chrsitians support the legalization of Marijuana and or support the use of it for pleasure based on the bible?

Smoking it wouldn't be the wisest/healthiest way to reap the benefits of using marijuana, so no.

Use it in ways that won't harm your lungs.

I do not believe it should be used for fun, rather for the medical benefits and also as an alternative for lab created pain pills that are addicting and cause kidney damage and other problems that make marijuana a better choice.

Prove it. Prove there are a large number of Christians that believe pot smoking is OK. Otherwise you are trolling. Just like in the thread where you assert Christians tipped the election in favor of Obama and then offered no proof. Really, this is getting tiring.

For recreational uses, no. For medicinal reasons, yes.

    Two things:

    1. Do you have proof that many Christians smoke pot recreationally, or is this one of those topics of yours in the vein of your brutal "ex-military", snipers on rooftops to control protesters, and sin/mental illness/depression threads?

    2. I thought those who smoke pot recreationally do so for the reason of getting high (to whatever degree).

freeatlast did not say there were a large number of Christians who believed smoking pot was OK.

He did not use the word large in that statement at all. Address his statement as it was written, don't rewrite it and then attack him for something he did not say.

Don't know about marijuana, I'd love for KY farmers to be able to grow industrial hemp for profit.

Where is the word "many" in freeatlast's statement about Christians smoking pot?

    Fred-

There's an obvious implication. Apparently others agree.

If I change it to "large number", will you be happy?

    It means the same thing.

I don't know ANY Christians that smoke pot for recreational purposes or any other purposes.

I HAVE known many in my younger, un-Christian days that smoked pot and there is no other reason to smoke except for getting high. One hit gets you high.
Stay away from it is the best advice.

There are some that claim to be be Christian who smoke marijuana. iI just visited another forum where a man who says he is a Christian and a "minister" who says he smokes marijuana.

Sadly, that "minister" is deceiving many. Marijuana is a mind altering drug that falls under the biblical heading of "sorcery"

And God promises to judge those who will not repent of their sorceries.
