Hello all who are contemplating doing the PhD (and those who have an academic interest):

Here is an article I ran across while counseling a young minister "to do" or "not to do" a PhD in Biblical Studies. I think it will engender some good discussion. I would like to hear some good feedback from a good number of my colleagues.

Let me hear from you real soon, OK? Enjoy!

Saw this earlier...it is very wise advice.

Should be interesting to see what happens in 10 years when the market is flooded with unemployed PhDs. Personally, I went into ministry but that was my plan all along. :)

I'd love to see what the Church looks like when we have sensible people with PhDs running many of them.

Your point is well taken, PIJ, though I would say the market is already flooded with unemployed PhDs. It will become even more so. I did a PhD in Historical Theology at SBTS, graduating almost a decade ago, but as a pastor I did not seriously consider the option of academia. I think I would have been among the disappointed had I done so.

Why would a Baptist want to go to a Catholic university? Why are you promoting a church that does not agree with the statement of beliefs of this site?

    Hello Ann,

I mean no disrespect at all. But why would someone NOT WANT to got to a RCC university? It is b/c you think that a Baptist should not? Or is it b/c a "newby" Baptist who is wanting to be a pastor would not go there b/c they would not be recognized and be given a place to minister in a local church?

I can think of probably at least 10 reasons why I, or someone who wants to teach at the university or seminary level, might want to go to a good, solid, and academic RCC university. If you want I can lay some of these out for you?

Personally I got one Master's degree from the Church of Christ seminary and my Doctorate from a very liberal Episcopalian university/seminary. Just so you will know for purposes of full disclosure. Please note the title of the dissertation below.

FTR (for the record), please do not take the tone of this post other than the way it is meant, with the upmost respect and dignity for you and your question, OK?

    "That is all!"

One of the sharpest Old Testament Scholars I have ever met was a solid Baptist doctinally, yet was studying for his PhD at Georgetown because of their noted Hebrew scholars.
